Make Your Own Coffee Syrup. Glorious Treats. Christmas Coal Candy. I think we've all met a few people who deserve a lump of coal from Santa, and I'm not talking about the cute candy version I'm sharing with you today!

Christmas Coal Candy

Coal candy is perfect for those on your naughty and nice list. It looks much like a lump of coal, but is sweet and sugary with an unexpected crumbly texture. I found it on one of my favorite sites - Fragrante Delicia - which you should certainly check out! My first batch failed because I cooked the sugar too long and it liquefied. The end result was a shiny block of black candy which was pretty, but far too hard to eat! Christmas Coal Candy (Carbon Dulce)Recipe adapted from Fragante Delicia, with my commentary [click for printable version]Step 1:1 egg white1 1/2 cups powdered sugar divided, plus a little extra might be needed for thickening purposes1 1/2-2 tsp. black gel food coloring such as Wilton brand1/2 tsp. lemon juice Whisk together 1 cup of the powdered sugar along with the remaining ingredients in a medium bowl. I made two batches, one in mango and one in strawberry. I've also seen severalrecipes for other versions of this that work a bit differently. The cooking time/temperature will depend on the type of fruit you're using. 1.5 cups mango pulp/pureed mango-or-1.5 cups pureed strawberries2.5 cups sugar1 tbsp butter6 fl oz liquid pectin My grocery store doesn't currently have fresh mango, so I used cut, jarred mango.

Pectin can usually be found either in the baking aisle -- usually in the same area as unflavored gelatin packets -- or possibly with canning supplies if your grocery store carries them. I'm totally going to use this, thanks. if you go to middle eastern stores, or even indian stores cardamon is waaay waaaaay cheaper. stop buying ethnic ingredients at chain grocery stores- they over charge!! Same goes with pomegranate juice... or figs... or dates. I love it when your comics take a turn to the psychedelic side... Holy cow I'm doing this the second I get home from work.

Ok, yeah, definitely making a bigger batch next time. I used to get the best Chai tea from the cafe at Borders when I worked there, for some reason I've never had better! Yeah, they had great Chai...then their cafes became Seattle's Best and the good Chai could never be had again. Are you planning to publish a book of the various comic recipes you've been making?

Twinings had a nice Indian Spice Chai in tea bags, which is nice. Oh wow this is the coolest recipe ever! Cardamom is a lovely, lovely spice, and makes a fabulous spiced sweetened bread.
