New York Governor Announces $1 Billion For Solar Energy

Launched in 2012, Cuomo’s NY-Sun Initiative has already been a tremendous success, with almost 300 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic capacity installed or under development, more than was installed in the entire decade prior to the program. Now with another major financial boost, Cuomo aims to install 3,000 (MW) of solar across New York. Suntech Power Holdings seeking US Chapter 15 liquidation. Desertec Solar Power Project Gains Steam, Critics

In terms of progress, Desertec can report that some Saharan governments have already expressed interest in the project. Said Mouline, head of Morocco’s renewable energy agency, said his country has identified sites for the network of solar thermal plants that would generate electrical power to be shared between Africa and Europe, according to a Reuters article. Morocco imports 96% of its energy, a heavy burden on the developing nation. “We would be generating enough power for us, and for export, for the next 100 years,” said Mouline. Geopolitical Nightmare But as independent analysts observed, sticky geopolitical and economic issues could stymie Desertec before it becomes much more than a website. From the Reuters story: Red tape and corruption are also major obstacles. Solar Panel Maker Moves Work to China. But now the company is closing its main American factory, laying off the 800 workers by the end of March and shifting production to a joint venture with a Chinese company in central China. Evergreen cited the much higher government support available in China. The factory closing in Devens, Mass., which Evergreen announced earlier this week, has set off political recriminations and finger-pointing in Massachusetts. And it comes just as President of China is scheduled for a state visit next week to Washington, where the agenda is likely to include tensions between the United States and China over trade and energy policy. Concentrated solar power. One of oldest forms of energy used by humans — sunlight concentrated by mirrors — is poised to make an astonishing comeback.

Concentrated solar power

I believe it will be the most important form of carbon-free power in the 21st century. That’s because it’s the only form of clean electricity that can meet all the demanding requirements of this century. Certainly we will need many different technologies to stop global warming. They include electric cars and plug-in hybrids, wind turbines and solar photovoltaics, which use sunlight to make electricity from solid-state materials like silicon semiconductors.

Yet after speaking with energy experts and seeing countless presentations on all forms of clean power, I believe the one technology closest to being a silver bullet for global warming is the other solar power: solar thermal electric, which concentrates the sun’s rays to heat a fluid that drives an electric generator. This electricity must meet a number of important criteria. A Moratorium On Solar Power <br />Draws Opposition From Fledgling Industry. The economics of solar power. Solar Power Could Reach One-Tenth of Energy Supply by 2025: Report. For at least the last year and a half, "Green Collar Jobs" has been the buzz term among those in business and policy circles as the answer to rising unemployment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Solar Power Could Reach One-Tenth of Energy Supply by 2025: Report

Two recently released reports show that the nation and states such as California can improve economic growth by employing clean energy strategies. In addition, one report states that "business-as-usual" could make California's economy worse in the long run. The Pew Charitable Trust released a report on June 10, noting that jobs in the clean energy sector have generated significantly more jobs than the overall economy. And in an unrelated report, released June 9, "Energy Pathways for the California Economy," (PDF) compiled by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley presents similar findings. The report by the ARE department was funded by the nonpartisan nonprofit organization, Next 10.
