Jay-Z vs the Game: Lessons for the American Primacy Debate. Late last week, the Los Angeles rapper the Game launched a blistering attack against the legendary New York blogger rapper :>) Jay-Z. At a series of European shows, the Game led crowds in cheers of "F*** Jay-Z" and "Old Ass N*****", and at one point went into an obsenity laced (but rather wickedly funny) rampage against Jay-Z's fiance' (wife?) Beyonce. Over the weekend, he released "I'm So Wavy [Too Hardcore to be a Jay-Z]" an inconsistent but catchy attack on Jay-Z (note: all links are to songs which are almost certainly NSFW and which you might find offensive; you've been warned).

When I started feeding this stuff to my friend Spencer Ackerman last week, his first take was that "the countdown to the end of the Game's career starts today. " Mine, me being a professor of international relations, was to start thinking about how this could be turned into a story about the nature of hegemony and the debate over the exercise of American power. Which brings us back to the Game. MixForLowerEndSpasmJuly09.mp3 (audio/mpeg Object) Butterz.co.uk - Is BACK! Elijah Skilliam-This Ones A Percy Ingle. Dr Dre's Detox ghostwritten by Ludacris? Dr Dre drafts in Ludacris to write his rhymes. Photograph: Corbis Since the release of Eminem's Relapse, Dr Dre's Detox is the now most anticipated album in hip-hop. It's just a pity he doesn't seem to be writing his own raps. Starting out as a member of NWA, Dre is now primarily a producer for hip-hop heavyweights including Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent. His work production is exemplary, but he has also strived to prove his lyrical credentials over the years. But as Detox's latest leak arrives on the internet, what emerges is that it is not Dre rapping. "With 30 mil sold, where's the fucking gratitude," Ludacris raps on OG's Theme.

The Spotify Playlist | Britpop Spotify: The Case Against, And The Case Against. As Universal Records release their Britpop compilation (reviewed by Ben Myers here), Quietus Editors Luke Turner and John Doran remember their encounters with the movement, and present two opposing Spotify playlists. There's currently a group knocking around on Facebook called 'Britpop Saved My Life'.

The title might make 30-year-old me cringe somewhat, but perhaps that's in self-awareness at the foibles of a younger self. I was 16 in 1995, and the movement, for better or worse, took over my teenage years. It was perfect music for my unsophisticated, romantic teenage brain, especially one bored by the tedious violence of Daily Mail-reading satellite town life, as I naively perceived it.

I'd always been into music, and like everyone else had been a fan of Nirvana, but they struck me as being rather predictably 'hate the parents' hormonal, too scruffy, and tediously American. There's a mistaken belief that all those who were into this music were a conservative bunch. Butthole Surfers - The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Hi-Fi VideoClip 1991. July 1, 2009 – the day the music wars started in earnest. Last night the guys from Dovecote Records, a small music label based in New York, were hanging out at their local bar. Employees from file sharing startup LimeWire showed up to have a party. There was confusion over the ownership of some pizza, and a riot almost ensued. From the Dovecote Blog: Woman: “Who the FUCK are you? And why are you eating our pizza?” Then things really got out of hand. Paul’s anger builds. My defining memory of Michael Jackson — vulnerable, brilliant, otherworldly — is of watching him dance to the soundtrack of a movie. This was early in our friendship, around ten years ago in New York. I visited Michael in his hotel room and was amazed to find it decorated with Hollywood posters and eight-foot cutouts: Anakin Skywalker peeping out from the folds of Darth Maul’s cape, ET bicycling over the full moon. I told him he should see The Matrix, because of the spoonbending sequence, and he immediately instructed his aides to book a whole cinema. The response was instant: ‘Yes Michael!’ We took Michael’s little boy to the Sony cinema, and sat side by side in the empty auditorium with boxes of popcorn and candy. He was in New York to record his album Invincible, a $30-million project that was intended to relaunch his career — but his confidence was so battered that he could no longer believe in his own musical genius.

He answered without hesitation. ‘It was the easiest thing to do.’ Glastonbury 2009 - Blur. Blur tickets at Hyde Park in London on 03/07/2009. Steven Wells Says Goodbye | In Extremis. Why is it that the people with the most profound stuff to say are also those who are the least capable of being able to express that profundity? I am talking about us. But then as one nudges closer to the edge, in the eye of the tiger storm (Tiger Storm, quite possibly the worst line and the best band name ever written), one is more inclined to shit oneself (literally and figuratively) than to throw shit at the system. All Tomorrow’s Parties (or ATP) is ten years old now, but it was one of the first of a new breed of music festivals that swapped the usual tented mudbaths for holiday camps – in this case, Butlins (as it now styles itself), Minehead. Indie rock, or certainly the literate, arty variant on show at ATP, is middle-class to the core. The main entertainment complex at Butlins, the Skyline Pavilion, is a huge, white, spiky marquee, apparently intended to look like the world’s biggest meringue, and it contained a trifle-like mess of competing themes and activities. Police have defended their use of a controversial form that requires live music venues to hand over details of performers, promoters and fans. Form 696 has helped cut shootings and stabbings in and around London gig venues, the Metropolitan Police said. The Met introduced the risk assessment form to identify gigs where trouble might flare up, partly in response to black-on-black violence. But it has been criticised for being heavy-handed and racially motivated. The Met said the form had "played its part" in an 11% drop in serious violence in licensed premises in 2008. Thomas Bowen, head of the Met team that deals with Form 696, said: "A co-ordinated effort, and 696 assisting the process of identifying potential gang conflict, is undoubtedly contributing towards that reduction of shooting incidents in licensed premises.

" Target audience One in 20 shootings now happened in or around licensed premises, he said - down from one in six at the start of 2007. "It needs to be abolished," he said. The Paper Hats. iTunes. Sayed Abbood - "Shlon Aslak" (Give Me Love: Songs of the Brokenhearted - Baghdad, 1925-1929) In the last decade, the reissue game has grown from an eccentric hobby into a full-blown business. No longer is a compilation of exotic tunes dug up from far-flung regions of the map an occasional surprise, it’s an ubiquitous happening.

In any given week, you can drop that hard-earned paycheck on a reissue of a rare soul group arranged by Charles Stepney barely heard on its original release in 1970; a compilation of ‘60s Turkish freakbeat psych never before available stateside; impossible to find recordings of an Arabic instrument with 70+ strings threaded across a sound box made of wood and fish skin; or a retrospective of early-’90s UK dance records compiled by a revered ragga jungle DJ. And that’s just on the front page of the Honest Jon’s Record Shop website. To most Western ears, Middle Eastern music has never been an easy pill to swallow. Take, for example, Sayed Abbood’s “Shlon Aslak.” Online music service Spotify opens doors to UK – as record industry slams them shut | Technology. A new online music service that has thrown open its virtual doors with a claim to be "the way we want to consume music in the future", has swiftly fallen foul of the music industry's licensing practices.

Spotify, created by two Swedish entrepreneurs, Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, has already attracted tens of thousands of users who spread private invitations to their friends after hearing about the site through internet chat. This week the company peeled off the "private" label to allow anyone in the UK to sign up. However, Spotify has been forced to remove thousands of tracks in a row over licensing. This has infuriated users and the software industry, which accused record and film companies of lobbying government instead of adapting to the 21st century. An internet radio service where users choose tracks, or let the company choose them, Spotify is being tipped as the leader of a new generation of innovative online music programs. Are police using 'risk-assessment' form 696 to close garage clubs? British rapper Kano performing at the O2 Wireless Festival, 2008 Photograph: Tristan Fewings/Camera Press It sounds like an innocuous piece of paperwork, but in the last two months "Stop form 696! " has become the rallying cry of the live music industry. Risk assessment form 696 is used by the Metropolitan police when trouble is expected at a gig or club. It requests information about performers and audience members from the licensee. Failure to submit it could result in six months in jail or a £20,000 fine.

Form 696 has been approved by all 21 London councils, and its use could soon spread to the rest of the UK. Form 696's ulterior motives have also raised concerns. "I've got a nagging suspicion that 'Irish' was not the answer they were looking for," says Feargal Sharkey. Last month, with the campaign taking shape, the form disappeared from the Met's website, to be replaced a week later with a version half the length. Two other incidents suggest form 696 is just the tip of the iceberg. Smithsonian Global Sound. Eluvium. Elitismdiagram600.gif (GIF Image, 600×200 pixels)
