Canon Rebel T1i 500D Guide. Published: August 2009 The Canon Rebel T1i 500D is yet another entry into Canon's entry-level line of consumer digital SLR cameras. However, it's not quite fair to call the T1i 500D "entry-level" given the sheer number of features packed inside this camera. From action photography to video capture, the T1i 500D is quite capable, and should not be merely considered as a digital SLR for beginners. At the same time, beginners need not be afraid of this camera if they are just making the transition from a full AUTO point-and-shoot.

A new feature on the T1i called "Creative Auto" lets new DSLR photographers manipulate camera settings without having to dive right in to the deep end of the pool. The 500D builds on the features of the digital Rebels that have come before it: the 1000D (XS), 450D (XSi), 400D (xTi), 350D (XT) and the original Digital Rebel - originally released way back in 2005. The 500D needs this feature set to remain competitive. Quick Overview Key Feature Top of Page In Comparison.

When buying a DSLR lens, the first decision to make is what focal length you want. The answer depends entirely on what you'd like to photograph. Before we get too far in a discussion of the importance of focal length, let's get the technical definition out of the way.

Focal length is measured in millimeters (mm) and it represents the distance from the optical center of a lens to the digital camera sensor when the subject of the photo is in focus. This is the standard textbook definition, but it's still not entirely obvious WHY you need to know about it before your purchase a new lens. Instead of the textbook approach, let's try the plain English explanation: With a short focal length you have to be close to your subject for a close-upWith a long focal length you can be far away and still get a close-upA zoom lens has a variable focal lengthA prime lens has a fixed focal length How do you decide which focal length lens you need?
