If I had a dollar for every time I wanted to put a virtual post-it on a website/image/link/idea/design/whatever, I’d be on my tropical island and not writing this blog post. Sound familiar? Finally, someone invented a service to help us curate our content into one semi-sensical place. Meet your new best friend, Pinterest . Pinterest is, as stated by Pinterest.com , “a virtual pinboard — a place where you can create collections of things you love and ‘follow’ collections created by people with great taste.” http://blog.compete.com/2011/05/23/a-very-pinterest-ing-ide/

A Very ‘Pinterest’-ing Idea

Last summer I did research for my independent study project in graduate school that resulted in “ The Use of Social Media in Higher Education for Marketing and Communication: A Guide for Professionals in Higher Education. ” The research was largely done in June and July 2008. During this time, very few universities were actively using Twitter. Since then I’ve noticed many universities trying to figure out ways to leverage their presence on Twitter, not only establishing one, but by actively finding ways to promote their use of it to engage community members. Some universities, including mine , use services such as Twitterfeed , EasyTweets or HootSuite to pipe their existing RSS feeds into their Twitter accounts, so that every time something new shows up in the feed, it automatically tweets the headline and link to the full story. This is a simple way to have news, events and blog posts automated. But, there is so much more that can be done to use Twitter in a less robotic way.

http://talkingtourism.wordpress.com/ I just read Tried and True Techniques for Fusing Offline and Online Marketing on the HubSpot Blog … it’s a great post about meshing your offline and online marketing efforts. I read a lot of product-oriented marketing material and often say to myself, “this is great, but how can it apply to tourism?” That’s an easy question to ask and not as easy to answer sometimes! Marketing a destination is, in many ways, so very different than marketing a product or even a service. We use a lot of the same tools and techniques as traditional product marketing, but there is an element missing in that old marketing mix model – you know, those 4Ps.

Blogs Wane as the Young Drift to Sites Like Twitter - NYTimes.com

“I don’t use my blog anymore,” said Mr. McDonald, who lives in San Francisco. “All the people I’m trying to reach are on Facebook.” Blogs were once the outlet of choice for people who wanted to express themselves online. But with the rise of sites like Facebook and , they are losing their allure for many people — particularly the younger generation.

SEO & Content Marketing - #seochat with Lee Odden - Online Marketing Blog

Last night I had the privilege of being the guest on #seochat – a fairly new but very active Twitter Chat that happens on Thursday nights at 8pm CT. Twitter chats are familiar territory and can be very engaging, especially when they’re as well run as #seochat. Thanks to @Dan_Patterson for inviting me. You can read the whole transcript of our discussion on SEO and Content Marketing here. Besides the host being organized, one of the keys to a successful Twitter Chat is the prep done by the guest. Time goes by insanely fast when 10, 20 or a few hundred people are all tweeting to the same hashtag at the same time.

Facebook is a Ponzi Scheme :: Joseph Perla

Now that you know what a Ponzi scheme is, I will tell you how and why Facebook is like a Ponzi Scheme. The argument is similar to how Paul Graham describes that Yahoo was a ponzi scheme in 1998. Facebook posts huge revenues. In fact, recent reports are that Facebook is very profitable . This boosts both their respect in the world and their valuation. However, these returns, while real, are unsustainable.
The movie "The Social Network" became big box office not only because it was an excellent movie, but also because enough people were familiar with Facebook . Mark Zuckerberg, one of Facebook's founders, was the subject of a recent "60 Minutes" profile where he demonstrated the updated user profile page. Popular culture references aside, Facebook is ranked as the top-visited site on the Internet by Google AdPlanner . Facebook has made several changes to Facebook Pages, the official pages associated with businesses, and these changes offer opportunities to use Facebook as part of their marketing mix while maintaining a uniform brand identity. Facebook is also offering more tools to gauge the performance of these pages. Another social media site that was very much a niche site for only the savviest of Internet users just a couple of years ago but now is part of the larger culture is Twitter .

http://inventorspot.com/articles/hotel_bookings_migrate_web_sites_facebook_iphones_42479 Resulting from more and more hotels guests using smartphones and referring to Facebook for their travel needs, a select number of social media savvy hotels are developing booking widgets to extend reach beyond their Web sites. Up till now, the only place to book a hotel room online was at the hotel's Web site or through an Online Travel Agency (OTA). Now hotels can engage customers via Facebook applications and iPhones. Hotel Bookings Migrate From Web Sites To Facebook & iPhones

With reports that Facebook sees more traffic than Google , it makes sense that many SMB owners are getting serious about setting up shop on the hip social networking site. Facebook pages are often being used in lieu of a real Web site (which I’d caution against) or as a business’ second home on the Web. With all the opportunities that Facebook provides for small business owners, it’s important that you take the proper steps to increase your SEO efforts on the site.

Social Media Measurement: How Do We Measure ROI from Social Media?

Rather than measuring ROI, think of social media strategy as a way to improve customer relationship, counter negative publicity, generate website traffic, and increase brand awareness. This type of marketing strategy is a multi-way dialog – company talks to customers, customers talk to company, and perhaps most importantly – customers talk to each other. It’s very different than the old way of marketing because it’s softer and seeks to create an image for the company in the mind of the customers.
