At the JISC Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group meeting in October I delivered a showcase session summarising the components and benefits of Xerte and Xerte Online Toolkits – the fantastic tools developed by Julian Tenney and Pat Lockley at the University of Nottingham. I’ve been a member of the experts group since quite early on in its life together with some other colleagues with an FE background and although I knew most of those FE colleagues were already aware of the Xerte tools and in some case actively using the tools, I wasn’t quite sure how many members from the HE sector were already aware of or using the tools.

So the formal title of my showcase was: No cost, No skills, No barriers, No excuses! E-Learning authoring for everyone with Xerte Online Toolkits. Xerte is an open-source development environment for creating online content which allows authors to very easily create rich media resources which are highly accessible and usable in a variety of contexts. As part of the development, a series of templates have been created which make it very simple to create visually appealing, interactive and accessible online materials. This workshop offers a brief introduction to the Xerte project, an opportunity to hear from colleagues about their use of Xerte, and most importantly, an opportunity to try it out for yourself.

Going viral: Using social media to publicise academic research | Higher Education Network | Guardian Professional. Only a tiny fraction of the research done in universities gets covered by newspapers. So I feel an unbridled sense of satisfaction if I get a research story mentioned in the mainstream media. I'll admit to punching the air when listening to the Today programme and hearing one of our academics talk about their research. But there are increasingly new techniques for sourcing, and promoting, stories using social and digital media. Take the story about, Alex Baker and Chris Rose, two PhD students that sent a helium balloon up to the edge of space, with two cameras in an insulated box suspended below. What's most remarkable about this story was how I came across it – one of their fellow students posted it on Twitter, and I happened to come across the tweet as it mentioned @sheffielduni.

The universities of Birmingham and Nottingham, which collectively have about 67,000 students and 14,000 staff, announced their "framework for collaboration" on 3 February, unveiling a model that they believe could be adopted by other institutions.
