Writer's Workshop Resources and Ideas

The majority of time of Writing Workshop is devoted to independent writing. During this time, students are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing their pieces. Depending on the age and abilities of your students, independent writing can be as short as 15 minutes or as long as 45-60 minutes. It helps to build stamina with your class, beginning with a short amount of time and building that time until they can work for up 30 minutes or more.

Mini Lessons

I have been trying to get a 10 minute reading mini lesson in at the beginning of reading. It has been a fun challenge to figure out where I am going with each mini lesson and how much I can teach in 10 minutes! I have been trying to incorporate our anthology (basal) into the mini lessons. I use the anthology to assess the skill I am teaching in the mini lesson. I am currently reading Mosaic of Thought by Keen and Zimmerman. I am sure this will change my view of teaching skills during mini lessons! http://www.tips-for-teachers.com/Mini%20Lessons.htm

Launch Lessons

Launch Focus Lessons Each September, teachers in grades 1-5 spend a number of weeks launching Readers' Workshop. Kindergarten launches their Readers' Workshop each January. Focus lessons during this unit of study will familiarize students with the routines, behaviors, and habits of mind that will promote successful independent reading throughout the year. Sample launch lessons are provided below. Modify these lessons as necessary to match your particular grade level and the needs of your students. http://www.wrsd.net/literacy/launch.cfm
