Having experimented with the Twitter API for a couple of years I’m familiar with a number of the limitations, particularly when it comes to the Twitter Search API. The biggest being the maximum number of tweets (1,500) and timeframe (last 7 days) you can extract in one go. This means that whilst tools like NodeXL’s* the built-in import Twitter searches are convenient to grab network data for small and sort events you need to find an alternative data source for larger or extended timeframes. *I recall reading Gephi was going to get a social network import plugin not sure of the status In this post I highlight how you can use Google Spreadsheets to feed social network analysis tools like NodeXL and Gephi with larger conversation data sets.
I’ll be working through this in NodeXL, but the core part of getting the edges data into a .csv format is applicable to other tools like Gephi. The data source There are a number of tools/services you can use to grab tweets over an extended time. Altc2011. Many of the relevant websites have long since disappeared, so she turns to the archives to find out what has been preserved. But she comes up against a brick wall: much of the material was never stored or has been only partially archived. Analysis of Twitter Usage at Recent ALT-C Conferences Like this: Like Loading... From ground-breaking use of blogs and Google Docs as a learning aid for primary pupils to the creation of an innovative games-based learning website, invention and creativity are at the heart of the Learning Technologist of the Year Award 2011 presented at the Association for Learning Technology annual conference in Leeds. The awards, which this year have been sponsored by Adobe Systems, will be announced on September 7 at the 18th annual conference of the ALT, Thriving in a colder and more challenging climate, which runs from September 6-9 at the University of Leeds. Seb Schmoller, ALT Chief Executive, said: “This year’s entries showed the breadth of excellent practice in technology enhanced learning in the UK and more widely, and the real difference that learning technologists are making to learners across all sectors of education.

ALT-C 2011 - 0107 Preparing for a Thaw – Seven Questions to Make Sense of the Future Adam Cooper, Scott Wilson Asking questions about the future is a timeless human activity that is brought to the fore in times of change. Learning technology is clearly situated in our wider environment and how we engage with it is bound up with our culture and history. This means that when looking to the future, the ‘wisdom of crowds’ is likely to provide as rich a picture of what is to come as expert opinion. In this workshop we will follow Ratcliffe (2002), who declared “foresight is largely a matter of conjecture, and at the heart of conjecture lies conversation” by introducing participants to a simple conversational technique known as “Seven Questions” (Amara and Lipinsky, 1983). The facilitators will blog a personal view (on the JISC CETIS website) on the collected responses on the same day as the workshop.

Image: Doctor reading articles by rosefirerising The longer I am online and the more I become immersed in being online the more complex this existence seems. I want to talk about some principles for "Digital Professionalism" which have been put forward by Rachel Ellaway in the journal Medical Teacher last year.
The journal is paywalled so I am going to give the principles here. The 7 principles are: Principle #1: establish and sustain an on online professional presence that befits your responsibilities while representing your interests. Be selective in which channels and places you establish a profile. Principle #2: use privacy controls to manage more personal aspects of your online profile and do not make anything public that you would not be comfortable defending as professionally appropriate in a court of law. Principle #3: think carefully and critically about how what you say or do will be perceived by others and act with appropriate restraint in online communications.

ALT-C 2011 - ALT Live Beta. This has been an experiment I have been thinking about doing for a while now, and I emphasise this is an experiment, hence the beta moniker. I have no idea if this will work as planned or is something that people will engage with. Amplification of conferences is something that has been happening for a while and I have discussed at length in a previous blog post. In that post I talked about my social media experience of the ALT Conferences I had attended since 2003.
I said that ALT-C 2007 was a bit of a sea change and the first of the ALT Conferences that social media really started to amplify the conference beyond the walls of the physical conference. Amplification can take many forms and Brian’s post about providing an Amplified Event Service is well worth reading. In the past at ALT-C, though we have had the live streams of the keynotes and invited speakers, most amplification has been textual through Twitter and blogs. The video stream will be embedded into this page. Photo source. ALT-C 2011: Thriving in a colder and more challenging climate. For the title of his latest novel, Martin Amis borrows from this Alexander Herzen quote “The death of contemporary forms of social order ought to gladden rather than trouble the soul. Yet what is frightening is that the departing world leaves behind it not an heir, but a pregnant widow.
Between the death of the one and the birth of the other, much water will flow by, a long night of chaos and desolation will pass.” Amis is writing about the sexual revolution, but I think the same can be applied to the digital revolution. This is what causes so much angst in the popular press, and amongst society in general. We can see what is passing, but what is forming is still unclear.
"So who covers all that news if some significant fraction of the currently employed newspaper people lose their jobs? We can think about some general directions of travel, we can make some guesses, and most of all, we can experiment. As Amis puts it in his novel, "it was a revolution. The Heutagogic Archives.
