Lonely Planet Vietnam. What To Do In Ho Chi Minh City - The Dropout Diaries. Home»What To Do In Ho Chi Minh City Preparations are underway for an old friend to visit us in Ho Chi Minh City. And the preparations are taking the form of planning what we’re going to do with our stylish European mate while he’s here. He’s visited before, so he has seen some of the good stuff. But I want to share my Saigon with him, in all its chaotic quirkiness. I want to take him to a footpath eatery to sit on a tiny chair and feast on seafood, then zip him over to a fancy bar for cocktails — all while wearing the same pair of shorts. I want to show him the smiles, which are warmer and wider outside Ho Chi Minh City’s tourist areas, and the everyday life of Vietnamese people.

I want to fill him full of Vietnam’s fabulous coffee, phở, bánh mì, bánh bèo, mì Quảng, bánh cuốn and all my other favourite dishes. When friends come to visit we EAT, as Sally (aka Unbrave Girl) gracefully demonstrates. The Notre Dame Cathedral If my vegetarian sister was coming to visit, we’d: Well …. Taiwan Day Five: Back to Taipei, Maokong Gondola, Bitan Scenic Area, and Yilan. | Korean Tacos. On my last full day in Taiwan, I woke up early in Hualien to head to the train station.

I jumped on a train with about a minute to spare again! When I got back to Taipei Main Station it was around lunch time so I decided I needed to try McDonald’s. They had a cute little set menu with some interesting mini-burgers, curly fries, and a coke float. It was really good! After that I took my stuff back to the hostel, and rested for awhile. I was looking for something low key to do in the afternoon, so I decided to go on the gondola up to the Maokong tea village at the top of a mountain bordering the city. I rode the subway all the way to Taipei Zoo and followed the directions to get to the gondola station. After exploring the temple and taking a lot of pictures, I made my way up to the top of the mountain.

Eventually I had to make my way back down the gondola to go across town to meet my new friends Rachel and Miguel for dinner. Like this: Like Loading... Newsflash! Would I call myself a foodie? Meh. I don’t know. I obviously enjoy eating and drinking, and food is awesome, but I’m also a pretty picky eater. I like what I like and I rarely go out of my comfort zone. Moving to Korea has definitely helped me open up a bit; never in a million years did I ever think I’d eat kimchi almost daily. I’ve slowly started to eat seafood, and my tolerance for spicy food has increased ten-fold. Still, I’m pretty particular about what I eat. I made a vow to myself that when I took the trip to Malaysia and Singapore that I would step out of my comfort zone and try at least 1 new (to me) dish per day.

Let me be the 34095437 person to say that the food in Malaysia is absolutely incredible. A trip to Malaysia wouldn’t be complete without a banana leaf meal. Taiwan gives tourists free Wi-Fi at 4,400 iTaiwan hotspots. Taiwan became one of the first countries in the world to offer free wifi on a mass scale to its citizens, and now it is extending that to any foreign tourist, also for free, in a move that will gain it a lot of goodwill.

The Taiwan government-backed free “iTaiwan” wireless network launched in 2011, and now has about 4,400 hotspots in major tourist spots, transportation hubs, cultural establishments and government offices all over the island country. Citizens needed just their local phone number to register and then use the semi-fast 1 MBPS service. Now, for foreign vistors, who generally have trouble getting a local SIM in the country (two forms of identity, etc), the process of tapping these wi-fi networks has been made a lot easier starting this month: visitors can open an iTaiwan account at a Taiwan Tourism Bureau counter/center, show their passport as ID and that’s it: they can login using their account, on their digital devices.

Located not too far from the DaAn station, Pig and Pepper greets you with a bright yellow door to let us know we're at the right place.

Inside is inviting with seating areas broken off into different areas, with large groups sitting near the front window section. You could do a scavenger hunt of the pigs decorating the restaurant in paintings along the walls. Onto desserts! Taiwan Travel Company - Travel in Real Taiwan. To be sure, if you’re in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan and its largest metropolis, you can’t not see this magnificent building. The tower, which rises half-a-kilometre into the sky, is a beautiful structure of eight outwardly tapering sections.

It takes on the image of a modern, soaring pagoda — in fact, such religious buildings were a source of its architectural inspiration. A tip: Go to the top of the building in the hour before sunset. The light of the setting sun across the sky — greens, reds, oranges — is beautiful above the modern bustle of Taipei. The New York Times, The Miele Guide and Anthony Boudain all love it and it has a Michelin star. Din Tai Fung is renowned for a particular seemingly humble meal: the dumpling.

Penang's Little India | The Malaysia blog. One of the joys of Georgetown is that you never quite know what to expect next.

A walk down Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang’s ‘Street of Harmony’, allows visitors to appreciate the wealth of different cultural and architectural influences that make up this town. Within a matter of minutes you are transported from the colonial British enclave around St George’s Church into the heart of the Chinese community at the famous Goddess of Mercy Temple, and then past one of Penang’s most fascinating areas: Little India.

Georgetown’s Little India transports you to South Asia in a matter of seconds. If you have only just acclimatised to Chinese Penang then prepare for another culture shock. Step down Lebuh Pasar and into the surrounding streets of Lebuh King, Lebuh China and Lebuh Penang (not to be confused with the much busier Jalan Penang), and the first thing that will strike you is the change of smells in the air. Bright shop signs in Tamil and English line the streets of Little India. Two days on a budget in Hanoi | The Vietnam blog. Most people travelling through Hanoi give the city a couple of days before heading to Halong Bay, Sapa or down to the centre and south of the country. Here are our suggestions for what to do on a tight budget if you have just two days here and want to make the most of them.

Very small people or a very big one pillar pagoda. On day one, explore Old Quarter. This is one of Hanoi’s highlights and could take up the best part of a day – especially if you’re really into souvenir shopping or take lots of breaks to enjoy the delicious local coffee or street snacks. If you’re on foot, this is free although you’ll have to pay for refreshments and souvenirs. Make sure you include a stop at Bach Ma Temple on Hang Buom Street, wander along Hang Ma and Lan Ong Streets and do check out the stalls around the outskirts of Dong Xuan, the market along Phung Hung, shopping around Hang Giay, St Joseph’s Cathedral and of course Hoan Kiem Lake.
