Pearltrees, a social tool for discovering and organizing Web content, has announced it secured a second round of funding for €1.3 million (US$1.6 million).

Pearltrees lands $1.6M more for social discovery on the Web

The funding will be used to expand globally, especially in the US. Pearltrees is a free online social network that allows users to tag (or “pearl,” in the site’s parlance) content on the Web and share it with others who have similar interests. Users create pearltrees which house the individual pearls, or pieces of content, so that you can keep them all in one place. Other users can see your pearls and opt to stay updated on what content you’re finding.

You don’t need an account to view what someone’s tagged, but only registered users can create pearls or follow someone’s pearltree. Several other companies could be considered competitors, including recent DEMO company Pinyadda, whose offering gathers and organizes Web content relating to a user’s specified interests. Final Fantasy. Pearltrees grabs another €1.3 million. Chances are, you’ve already heard of Pearltrees - possibly because the company caught attention when it sponsored LeWeb in Paris or more recently the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

Pearltrees grabs another €1.3 million

And if you haven’t, now is the right time to acquaint yourself with the service: the French start-up founded in 2008 has just scored another €1.3 million in funding to change the way you navigate the web. The social book-marking and navigation start-up – which allows users to organize and share their favorite websites via a system of digital “pearls” – has raised roughly €3.5 million to date. The inital €1 million raised was in June 2008 followed by €1.2 in June of the following year (in addition to some public funding from the French government). As the company seems to have a rather consistent annual funding pattern, we only hope that the valutation or shares aren’t being compromised. Ok, perhaps not everyone has a grasp on what Pearltrees is all about – but those which have seem to be die-hard fans. YouTube Wins Viacom Copyright Infringement Suit.

Google has won its long-running case against Viacom, which accused the search giant’s YouTube of massive copyright infringement and asked for $1 billion in damages.

YouTube Wins Viacom Copyright Infringement Suit

Viacom promises to appeal the federal court ruling. You can read all of U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton’s decision at the bottom of the post, where I’ve embedded the ruling. Short version: Stanton buys Google’s longstanding argument–that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act protects YouTube from Viacom’s claims. And he seems to agree with Google (GOOG) on almost every point. Even though YouTube and Google executives knew the site had plenty of clips that violated copyright, “mere knowledge of prevalence of such activity in general is not enough” to support Viacom’s claims, Stanton wrote in a 35-page decision. If the ruling holds up, it’s a big blow to traditional copyright laws.
