The food- and waterborne diseases and zoonoses content for the 2014 Annual Epidemiological Report provides a snapshot of the epidemiological situation in Europe.

ECDC 20/11/14 Trends in Europe for food- and waterborne diseases and zoonoses

The report features data from 2012 and gives an overview of the epidemiology of each disease, some of which are included below: Campylobacter cases increased in the five-year period between 2008 and 2012 but decreased slightly in 2012. Human campylobacteriosis has remained the most commonly reported gastrointestinal disease in Europe since 2005. Handling, preparation and consumption of broiler meat has been estimated to account for 20%–41% of human campylobacteriosis cases.

FOOD CONTROL - 2014 - Persistence of foodborne pathogens and their control in primary and secondary food production chains. U bevindt zich op: Home › Documents and publications › 2015 › Number of cases remains stable despite slight rise in number of outbreaks of food-related disease The report ‘Recording of foodborne infections and food poisoning in 2013’ issued by RIVM and the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) shows a total of 290 outbreaks involving 1,460 cases of foodborne infection or food poisoning.

RIVM NL 19/01/15 Number of cases remains stable despite slight rise in number of outbreaks of food-related disease

This is the first time that data from both organisations have been combined in a single study, and it is clear that the number of outbreaks has risen slightly in recent years while the number of cases has remained more or less stable. 2012 is an exception. In that year as many as 1,149 people fell ill in a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Thompson caused by eating contaminated smoked salmon. Hygiene measures By no means everyone who falls ill after eating food notifies their GP or the NVWA. Development of FoodChain-Lab has been driven by a need for appropriate software in several food-related outbreaks in Germany since 2011. The software allows integrated data management, data linkage, enrichment and visualization as well as interactive supply chain analyses. J Food Prot. 2015 Nov;78(11):2093-8. Reporting of food poisoning has been mandatory for European Union member states since 2003. Keywords. ECDC 17/12/15 Increasing food-borne infections in the EU in 2014, show data from ECDC and EFSA in latest annual zoonoses report

“It is worrying that Campylobacter and Listeria infections are still rising in the European Union,” Mike Catchpole, Chief Scientist at ECDC said, “this situation highlights the importance of enhancing listeriosis surveillance through molecular typing, work currently developed by ECDC and EFSA, and strengthening the EU-wide Campylobacter control measures at EU-level”. There were 2 161 confirmed cases of Listeriosis infections in 2014, a rise of 16% compared with 2013. Although the number of cases are relatively low, the rise of reported listeriosis cases is of particular concern as the surveillance of these infections is focused on severe forms of the disease, with higher death rates than for other food-borne diseases, particularly among the elderly, and patients with a weak immune system. 21berthe521528.pdf. ECDC 20/10/15 Expert Opinion on the introduction of next-generation typing methods for food- and waterborne diseases in the EU and EEA

The advent of new microbial typing and detection techniques, in particular whole genome sequencing (WGS) and culture-independent diagnostic methods, brings about a fundamental change in the way diagnostics and typing are performed for foodborne infections.
