Siri, make it so: what designers can learn from sci-fi interfaces. 50inShare Jump To Close Even though interfaces, devices, and controls in movies and TV shows are often visible just long enough to drive the story forward, many have achieved pop culture immortality, ranging from Star Trek's communicator and the WarGames WOPR computer to the Terminator HUD, and of course, HAL.

Siri, make it so: what designers can learn from sci-fi interfaces

Nathan Shedroff and Christopher Noessel argue that we can draw practical design lessons from these interfaces. Last year the pair published Make It So: Interface Design Lessons From Sci-Fi, and followed it up with a design blog, regularly cataloging sci-fi design concepts in everything from The Fifth Element and Metropolis to classics like Forbidden Planet and Barbarella. How Star Trek artists imagined the iPad… 23 years ago. One interesting characteristic of Star Trek: The Next Generation—one that separated it from the original series and most of the early films—was its widespread use of smooth, flat, touch-based control panels throughout the Enterprise-D.

This touch interface was also used for numerous portable devices known as PADDs, or Personal Access Display Devices. These mobile computing terminals bear a striking resemblance to Apple's iPad—a mobile computing device largely defined by its smooth, flat touchscreen interface. To understand the thinking that led to the design of the Star Trek PADD, we spoke to some of the people involved in production of ST:TNG (as well as other Star Trek TV series and films), including Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda, and Doug Drexler. All three were involved in various aspects of production art for Star Trek properties, including graphic design, set design, prop design, visual effects, art direction, and more. Info: The mighty Joseph Kosinski invited Munkowitz to the GFX party once again, this time for his spring blockbuster feature film JOE-BLIVION… Predictably, the list of graphic assets to be created was obscene, so munko assembled and led another super team of GFX mercenaries and descended into the lovely confines of Crater Lake Productions to generate the aforementioned fuckload of graphic content… Working with Joseph always brings out the best in Munk and Company, and this time around was certainly no exception… OBLIVION © Universal Pictures, Inc.

Infinite white spaces have proliferated as a basis for virtual realities, exemplified by the Matrix film trilogy.

Zion Control

In the most iconic example, an armory session begins with gun racks rushing toward the screen. A visual demonstrated in the trailers that helped catapult the Matrix to box office success. One that inspired other works including the once oft-played commercial, AutoTrader Whoosh. The aforementioned scene ultimately overshadowed a more intriguing infinite white space. In the Matrix Reloaded, six off-white clad individuals arranged in circular formation constitute Zion Control. Here virtual reality offers superior interface control and data dissemination within a setting inherently soothing vs the real world’s violent clash of industrial equipment, electronics and grunge.
