Transformers: Dark of the Moon: Film Review

Pleased with his first effort but downright apologetic about the second Transformers movie, director Michael Bay has thrown every imaginable visual effect, CG animation and physical stunt, all in 3D, into the battle for planet Earth. Bay really needed a gag shot where one alien transforms itself into the kitchen sink. Make no mistake: Out of a line of Hasbro toys, Bay has created a world of his own. Call it Bay World. It has its own logic, which is movie logic cubed. That a huge worldwide audience is primed for this movie hardly needs stating. Then, too, Bay World has always felt misshapen. Bay and writer Ehren Kruger kick-start the demolition derby with a longish sequence that recasts America’s space program of the ‘60s and ‘70s as an actual race between the U.S. and the Soviets to reach the dark side of the moon, where an alien spacecraft has crashed.

Box Office Preview: Can 'Transformers' Reverse 3D Decline?

One thing is clear: The threequel will be the biggest referendum yet on 3D, which is showing sudden signs of fatigue in North America. This past weekend, only 37% of the domestic grosses for Cars 2 came from 3D screens, an all-time low. Only a few months ago, a studio could count on 55% or 65% of the total gross coming from 3D. Shia LaBeouf And Michael Bay Are Quitting Transformers. The Transformers franchise made Shia LaBeouf a mega-star, but he can’t play second fiddle to a bunch of computer-generated robots forever.

Shia LaBeouf And Michael Bay Are Quitting Transformers

So it should be no surprise to hear that after the current movie, Dark of the Moon, he’s calling it quits. Talking to MTV during their movie awards Shia made it all pretty clear. He says, “I'm not coming back to do another one.” And actually it sounds like if Paramount wants more (and come on, these things are a cash cow, they will), the whole thing may have to move on to a completely new bunch of filmmakers. Even Michael Bay may not be up for Transformers 4. He’s throwing the word reboot around a little casually there. It doesn’t sound like he bears the franchise any particular ill-will though.

Michael Bay Writes To Theater Projectionists — & Writes To Fans: “See This Movie In 3D”

He writes this to fans today: Thank You Note From Michael Bay 06/26/2011I just want to take the opportunity to thank all the fans around the world for letting me have fun with the Transformers franchise. It has been a wonderful opportunity to have worked with about 4000 crew members around the world. These artists are some of the very best in the entire film business. I’m honored to have had you work along side me. . — Michael Bay now writes to projectionists after he’d already called the chief executives of major theater chains to implore them to show Transformers: Dark Of The Moon in a way that burns out projector bulbs more quickly but makes 3D look brighter and sharper.
