Story of cities #5: Benin City, the mighty medieval capital now lost without trace

Benin City, originally known as Edo, was once the capital of a pre-colonial African empire located in what is now southern Nigeria. The Benin empire was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in west Africa, dating back to the 11th century. Manteau de fourrure oversize - Coat Sale - Maje.com. Robert Skidelsky knocks the scientific halo off mainstream economists' teaching and research. LONDON – In last month’s European Parliament election, euroskeptic and extremist parties won 25% of the popular vote, with the biggest gains chalked up in France, the United Kingdom, and Greece.

Robert Skidelsky knocks the scientific halo off mainstream economists' teaching and research.

These results were widely, and correctly, interpreted as showing the degree of disconnect between an arrogant European elite and ordinary citizens. Less noticed, because less obviously political, are today’s intellectual rumblings, of which French economist Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century, a withering indictment of growing inequality, is the latest manifestation. We may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the neoliberal capitalist consensus that has prevailed throughout the West since the 1980s – and that many claim led to the economic disaster of 2008-2009.

Bargaining over Babies: Theory, Evidence, and Policy Implications

This fact suggests that for a birth to take place, the parents should first agree on wanting a child. Using newly available data on fertility preferences and outcomes, we show that indeed, babies are likely to arrive only if both parents desire one, and there are many couples who disagree on having babies. We then build a bargaining model of fertility choice and match the model to data from a set of European countries with very low fertility rates. Je t'aime, Papa: Justin Trudeau's eulogy to his father. This speech first appeared in The Globe and Mail on Oct. 4, 2000, the day after Justin Trudeau delivered his eulogy at the state funeral for his father, Pierre Trudeau, at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal.

Today’s most heartwarming story is brought to you from a beach in Brazil.

Penguin swims 5,000 miles every year to see man who saved his life

It’s the story of a South American Magellanic penguin who swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life. Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found the tiny penguin, covered in oil and close to death, lying on rocks on his local beach in 2011. Robe-alexander-mcqueen-beige-2209195. It's OK to feel insecure sometimes – confidence lapses aren't character flaws. We’ve heard it all before: women need to up our confidence game. We need to work on our self esteem, feel beautiful just the way we are, lean in, be bold, practice self care, battle our imposter syndrome and be a #girlboss. A day doesn’t go by on social media where a friend doesn’t share some sort of inspirational meme created for women – it’s all motivation all the time.

It’s … nice, I suppose. The superhero of artificial intelligence: can this genius keep it in check? Demis Hassabis has a modest demeanour and an unassuming countenance, but he is deadly serious when he tells me he is on a mission to “solve intelligence, and then use that to solve everything else”. Coming from almost anyone else, the statement would be laughable; from him, not so much. Hassabis is the 39-year-old former chess master and video-games designer whose artificial intelligence research start-up, DeepMind, was bought by Google in 2014 for a reported $625 million. He is the son of immigrants, attended a state comprehensive in Finchley and holds degrees from Cambridge and UCL in computer science and cognitive neuroscience.

When economists ignore the human factor, we all pay the price. The Guardian recently asked nine economists whether we’re heading for another global financial crash and they gave many different answers. Yet still we turn to economists as if they were physicists, armed with scientific predictions about the behaviour of the body economic. We consumers of economics, and economists themselves, need to be more realistic about what economics can do. More modesty on both the supply and the demand side of economics will produce better results. Hellovox - Grow your ideas. Heribert Watzke: The brain in your gut.
