This was a very L&D-centric view of workplace learning, with training at the centre and the outer – and larger – concentric circles containing the other ways of learning at and for work. In this post, however, I want to consider the Individual’s Perspective of Workplace Learning. First of all, please note, I have not used the word Learner here, because for the Individual – the employee, the worker – it is clear it is not all about the learning but about the work. A society’s view of education is simply a reflection of the broader culture. Back when America was far more homogeneous and agrarian, we developed schools that reflected those values and ideals, right down to the calendar we taught kids on. I would argue one reason there is such confusion over where education should go in the future in this country, is because we now have so many competing visions of what our culture is and how that should collectively define us in the 21st Century.

But if you step back, remain objective, and keep your eyes open, what is happening in the world today is pretty clear. And when we understand the direction of the broader world, the role and direction of education comes into focus. The L&D world is splitting in two (Jane Hart) It is now very clear to me, that the world of L&D is splitting in two. There are those who think that the old ways of training are still valid and sufficient for today’s workforce, and there are those who realise that the world has moved on and a new approach to supporting workplace learning is essential. The first group of L&D professionals I refer to as Traditionalists, since they cling onto 20th century views of Training & Development: They focus on classroom training and/or e-learning as the only valid way to transfer knowledge into people’s heads.

Moving from a Training Culture to a Learning Culture (Jane Hart) I’ve just read an interesting post on Stephen Gill’s blog about how PwC Canada is striving for a Learning Culture. In fact I’m seeing this approach becoming a growing trend in a number organisations that recognise that in the modern workplace it’s no longer just about training people, but building a true learning culture that promotes and supports all the ways we learn at work. These organisations also recognise that role of L&D is evolving in a number of new ways from its traditional role of creating, delivering one-size-fits all content and managing/measuring learning outcomes (in some sort of LMS) towards … Although the first involves modernising existing training practices, the second requires quite different approaches:
