That’s an increase from around 380,000 apps released in 2012, adeven says. That will likely exacerbate the discovery situation, which is made clear by a separate study by mobile marketing firm Surikate that says 81 percent of U.K. App Store visitors stop browsing after checking out the top 50 apps. Adeven, too, found that most apps were likely to slip past consumer eyes, with 64 percent not securing a ranking spot for the month of December, turning them into what the firm calls “zombie apps.” A zombie app has very little chance of being discovered since it isn’t ranked, according to adeven, which affects not only its visibility in top charts, but also in search because of the way Apple weights those results.

Japan's leading consumer tech firms have a lot riding on jumbo-sized ultra-high definition TVs, a new energy efficient screen technology, water resistant smartphones and a revamped smart TV interface. Sony, Panasonic and Sharp saw their stocks plunge to 30-year lows in 2012 after racking up huge losses. This financial year only Sony forecasts a return to profit. By contrast Panasonic predicts it will sink 765bn yen ($9.6 billion; £6bn) deeper into the red - for context that's on a par with power company Tepco's loss after the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown - while Sharp has said there is "material doubt" about its survival.

Sony hopes to turn around its fortunes with technology such as ultra-high definition TVs But one Tokyo-based consultant highlights a fourth key factor - strong competition from Samsung and LG. Is Apple overlooking iPhone growth potential in Japan? Two top dogs Japan's largest wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM ) has now expressed interest in carrying the iPhone, after the company has been losing subscribers to rivals that do offer Apple's device. President Katoru Kato said that carrying the iPhone is a possibility if the two companies can arrive at mutually-beneficial terms. That sounds pretty similar to what China Mobile (NYSE: CHL ) , the largest carrier in China, has been saying. Both carriers are top dogs in their respective countries, but there's one enormous difference: their subscriber bases.
