URBAN FARM™ Online - Sustainable City Living

http://www.hobbyfarms.com/urban-farm/urban-farm.aspx It doesn’t take a farm to have the heart of a farmer. Now, due to a burgeoning sustainability movement, you don’t have to own acreage to fulfill your dream of raising your own food. The new Urban Farm ™ magazine, from the editors of Hobby Farms , will walk you down the path to self sustainability. Urban Farm ™ magazine’s mission is to promote the benefits of self sustainability and to provide the tools with which to do it on any size property. Urban Farm ™ reaches out to those in the city and suburbs, those who are inspired by the local-food movement and who want to raise chickens and grow food for themselves, supporting local agriculture and living more sustainably. Urban farms are popping up all over America.

Ruthie Schwab, a member of the class of 2009, smells fennel fronds growing in the new organic garden on the south side of the University's Forbes College. Schwab spearheads the Garden Project, a student initiative overseen by the Office of Sustainability to educate the campus about sustainable food systems and the environment. Top left: An edible nasturtium sprouts from the 55-by-12-foot garden plot. Schwab said she hopes the garden will become a center of activity on campus, with lectures, cooking demonstrations and other events planned for the upcoming academic year. The garden features a variety of salad greens, including this Swiss chard, which is commonly referred to as "bright lights" because of its red stem. Fast Cities: Urban Farms: New York | Fast Company

Enlarge New York's concrete jungle is about to get more green -- and tasty -- thanks to Gotham Greens, which is building a hydroponic rooftop farm in Brooklyn. The eco-efficient farm will take a small bite out of the $2 billion in produce that's trucked into the city each year.

We’ve spent our first full year on the farm! We got a late start last Spring due to the new zoning legislation not going into effect until March, therefore postponing our ability to sell our produce, but we were still able to do quite a bit of experimenting for the rest of the year. We ran a Summer CSA and weekly farmstand, maintained restaurant and caterer sales, hosted regular volunteer workdays, and gave a handful of group farm tours. We grew a ton of beautiful, delicious produce. There were ups and downs this year; high and low moods and energy levels, crop failures and successes, moments when we felt so blessed with support and moments when we could have used more.
