Google+ Identity: As many of you may know, I had to wrangle with having my Google Plus profile suspended last Friday over a name-related question . I've been asked by a number of people to share my thoughts on the matter since how to handle identity has subsequently blown up into quite an issue with no easy answers. (I'll begin with some background on my particular case; 'Fox Magrathea Circe' is not the name I was born with, but it has been the name i have pervasively used for close to a decade, both online and off.

There are myriad reasons why individuals may wish to use a name other than the one they were born with. They may be concerned about threats to their lives or livelihoods, or they may risk political or economic retribution. They may wish to prevent discrimination or they may use a name that’s easier to pronounce or spell in a given culture. Online, the reasons multiply.

And there are anonymous heroes on the internet too, who fight repression, spread inspiration, ideas, wit and truth.Randi Zuckerberg Runs in the Wrong Direction on Pseudonymity Online | Electronic Frontier Foundation
The Nymwars rage on. Over the past several weeks Google has been engaged in a very public struggle with its users over its “real names” policy on Google+, prompting blog posts and editorials debating the pros and cons of allowing pseudonymous accounts on social networking sites. But there is one person for whom insisting on the use of real names on social networking sites is not enough. Unsurprisingly, that person is Facebook’s Marketing Director, Randi Zuckerberg. Speaking last week on a panel discussion about social media hosted by Marie Claire magazine, Zuckerberg said,Jon Pincus - Google+
"Over the past 50 hours I’ve lost a lot of friends here, and all of my transgender friends and family and all the older gay activists I was sharing with have all quietly mothballed their accounts. They can’t have their “real” names out there – they work with human rights organizations and do HIV/AIDS activism, etc." – + Violet Blue in a comment thread on Google+ Just a few days before Google+’s doors officially open on July 31, Google’s latest communications from + Vic Gundotra (via + Robert Scoble ) and + Bradley Horowitz on the raft of account suspensions and “common names” policy seem unlikely to put the “identity crisis” to rest.Lauren Weinstein's Blog: Google+, Privacy, and Balancing Identity

Removed but restored through influence is Limor Fried - AKA Lady Ada / Adafruit Industries: She was recently featured on the cover of WIRED Magazine. Google suspended Limor Fried “Ladyada” Google+ profile, no show-and-tell tonight… http://adafru.it/b16793 Her account has just now been mysteriously restored, though only after a groundswell of complaints. Suffice it to say, the rest of the deleted accounts will not have such well-placed advantages.

Everyone’s abuzz with the “nymwars,” mostly in response to Google Plus’ decision to enforce its “real names” policy. At first, Google Plus went on a deleting spree, killing off accounts that violated its policy. When the community reacted with outrage, Google Plus leaders tried to calm the anger by detailing their “new and improved” mechanism to enforce “real names” (without killing off accounts). This only sparked increased discussion about the value of pseudonymity. Dozens of blog posts have popped up with people expressing their support for pseudonymity and explaining their reasons.Luke Allnutt has a thoughtful piece on RFE/RL asking the above question: Would anonymity help activists on Facebook? His response, “maybe not,” relies on the idea that anonymity would be extended only to those with special “activist status,” something I haven’t heard concretely argued as a potential model but which is nonetheless troubling. Allnutt writes: If Facebook had a special “activist’s status,” where it officially allowed some accounts to be pseudonymous, where does it draw the line?
Jillian C. York » Would Anonymity Help Activists on Facebook? A Response to Luke Allnutt
Updated: As Google rolls out its Google+ social network, it is struggling with the same questions about identity that have caused problems for Facebook in the past: namely, how much should it force people to use their “real” names? The web giant has been disabling user accounts on Google+ for a variety of reasons over the past few weeks, but it has caused an outcry from many who feel it is being too strict in some cases and not enough in others. The big issue at the root of this battle, as we have pointed out before, is that in many cases anonymity (and pseudonymity) has real value. Are we losing that as a result of Google and Facebook’s real-name obsession? Those who have seen their accounts suspended in the recent crackdown by Google+ include some prominent members of the hacker community, including one programmer who goes by the single name “Skud,” as well as one well-known iPhone developer who’s usual moniker is “MuscleNerd.”

We have performed an analysis of anonymity in the Bitcoin system and published our results in a preprint on arXiv . The Full Story Anonymity is not a prominent design goal of Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin is often referred to as being anonymous.
