Outspoken Social Entrepreneur On Africa's Power Problems And Possible Solutions. Hollywood’s Highest Paid Women: Who’s the Most Socially Influential? By Kevin Shively – October 3, 2012 Yesterday, Forbes released its list of Hollywood’s highest-paid women. Our first question at the Simply Measured office was “Which ones are available?” The second question was “How can we graph this?” That got the wheels turning and helped me get over the fact that Gisele makes $45 million a year…I hate you even more Tom Brady.

What Does 'Power' Mean In The 21st Century? Last week I got sucked into a Twitter debate about the meaning and nature of power. Following the launch of the annual FORBES list of the world’s most powerful women, one female follower was insistent that the word “powerful” isn’t the best word. A better word for female leadership in the 21st century is “influential,” she said, because “power” means force and control, which many women are not motivated by. Meanwhile, a male follower noted that most men believe power is positive—why would it be different for women? A quick glance at Dictionary.com shows 32 definitions of the word “power,” not to mention its infinite connotations.

It got me thinking: Does power mean something different to male and female leaders? Has power changed as the world has changed? I went to the source, asking some of the world’s most powerful female leaders—from politico Janet Napolitano to Campbell’s Soup CEO Denise Morrison—what “power” means to them. Janet Napolitano, Secretary, U.S. See Also: Klout reveals a new scoring algorithm - and the critics are quiet. Klout has managed to collectively piss off most of the Internet more than once. When the site first launched, the mere idea of quantifying a person with a number was enough to anger critics – only to later incite yet more rage when it changed its scoring metrics.

When it comes to Klout, the fact that we’re easy to anger makes sense: First accepting that we are being measured by our social influence was a tough pill to swallow – an accurate one (it’s happening whether we like it or not), but a tough one. And then the idea that a Web app could be the deciding factor in all this proved even more difficult to accept, and it’s been incredibly challenging for that Web app to gain much faith. Faith Klout might be short on, but users it is not. As of fall 2011, Klout said “100 million people have Klout,” which means it’s assigned that many people Klout scores.

I’ve always felt the Fernandez has been unfairly condemned for Klout. The World's Most Influential Business Thinkers. How Extremely Successful People Sell Their Ideas Internally. The 6 People You Need in Your Corner. All Eyes on Ai Weiwei: Life Under Surveillance … and on Twitter … After His Arrest. As the one-year anniversary of Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei’s release from jail draws near, the whole world seems to be watching his every move. The whole world, that is, except for the Chinese people. Ai is cut off from most of the population of his own country after the government shut down his blog and stopped him from using Chinese social media.

When he was released from jail on June 22 of last year, after 81 days of detention, Ai found that the government had installed surveillance cameras all around his Beijing home and studio. He counted 15 within a 100-meter area. But the Chinese authorities have not completely cut off Ai’s access to the world outside of China. Ai is restricted to Beijing until June 22. Thinking Digital: The UK's Answer to TED. Tech conferences are so commonplace now that barely a day goes by without another event focused around startups, developers, or Web culture being announced. In such a competitive market, it can be hard for organizers to attract the caliber of speakers and volume of attendees to make an event worthwhile. Thinking Digital has been beating the odds successfully, if rather quietly, by putting on an event of exceptional quality for five years now.

This year’s event, which took place this week, was no exception. Billed as “an annual conference where the world’s greatest thinkers and innovators gather to inspire, entertain and discuss the latest ideas and technologies,” you may expect Thinking Digital to take place in San Francisco, New York or London. But no – its home is Gateshead, a town in the north-east of England, just a couple of minutes’ walk across a bridge from the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. So, what makes this such a unique event? See you there next year? 5 Startups Infusing Social Good with Innovation.

[Courtesy of Indiana University] "Influence" doesn't necessarily mean what you think it does. In the age of the social-media celebrity, a glut of Twitter followers or particularly pugnacious sampling of pithy updates are often the hallmarks of an influencer. In a new paper entitled Competition Among Memes in a World With Limited Attention, Indiana University researchers Lillian Weng, Alessando Flammini, Alessando Vespignani, and Filippo Menczer analyzed 120 million retweets connected to 12.5 million users and 1.3 million hashtags in order to model how information (as discrete units, or memes) disperses on the social network. Engagement. It's the buzzword du jour, particularly in regard to Facebook. It may have been good enough a year or two ago to just get a lot of people to like your Facebook Page but now you have to somehow occupy the attention of those people as well. But just as marketers are feeling the pressure to boost engagement, Facebook is raising the stakes. In early October, the social networking giant introduced some new engagement metrics including People Talking About This. For Electronic Arts, PTAT offered a new opportunity to try some stuff out and see if it actually boosted engagement. 1. 2. The average Facebook user has 245 friends, the survey of 877 respondents found. But the average friend on Facebook had 359 friends. This is because people are more likely to be friends with someone who has a lot of friends than someone who has only a small number of friends. Get it? In addition to having more friends, Facebook “power users” also contribute far more content to the social network than the typical user — that is, by definition, what makes them a “power user.”

Pew found that between 20 and 30 percent of Facebook users are considered a “power user” of at least one activity, like posting updates, adding photos, sending friend requests, or “liking” others’ posts.
