Poorsquare uses Foursquare to find freebies for you wherever you are. 7 November '11, 08:50am Follow We love to travel and we sure love a good freebie every now and then, so when Poorsquare combined these two things into a single package, it was already on its way to becoming a winner. Founded by Columbia Journalism School alumnus Jeff Novich and Andrew “Pinz” Pinzler, who graduated from the Kellogg School of Management, Poorsquare is a simple Web app with a simple mission: to point you to the free stuff in your neighbourhood.

It leverages Foursquare’s location, places and deals databases to achieve its purpose in life. Here’s how it works: you select the location you are interested in, the list of which currently online includes places in New York only, the type of free stuff you want, whether it should require a specific number of check-ins and if it applies for more than one person. You can, for instance, look for all the places in the Lower East Side in Manhattan that are offering free stuff for a single check-in for one person. Foursquare announces social location feature called 'Radar' for iOS5. In a blog post today, location-based app foursquare (yes, intentionally no capital F apparently) announced a new feature specifically for iOS5 called ‘Radar’.

A lot of app makers are creating new features that take advantage of all of Apple’s new iOS5 functionality, and foursquare was quick out of the gates to announce its own. The update for foursquare is not on the Apple App Store yet, as we’re sure that the company is inundated with new app updates for today’s iOS5 public launch. The company said this about Radar: The initial vision for foursquare centered around one question: can we build something to help make the world easier to use.

Until now, we’ve focused around sharing what you’re doing and building expertise, with features like checking in, tips and recommendations. Today, we’re super excited by what some of iOS 5′s newest features allow us to do. On a side note, the company has also changed a color that we’re familiar with. Foursquare’s new Radar feature fundamentaly changes the service.

Location-based check-in service Foursquare released a new version of its iPhone app today that adds a new feature called Radar, which takes full advantage of the latest version of Apple’s iOS 5 update. Using iOS 5′s new region monitoring functionality, the Radar feature sends alerts to users about things they are interested in whenever they are physically near the area. For instance, if a group of your friends are at the bar next door to you, Radar will shoot you a message letting you know. It also sends you alerts for things on all the Foursquare To-Do list you follow. The Foursquare app doesn’t have to be open for Radar to work, either. “Radar is a big step in the direction of Foursquare’s vision,” wrote Foursquare Head of Product Alex Rainert on the company’s blog. Not only does Radar add a new level of social interaction for its users, but the feature also has huge implications for Foursquare merchants.

“Basically, Foursquare is a hindsight service for the majority of people.
