It’s not often that the classification “Super Typhoon”—the equivalent of a strong Category 4 or 5 Hurricane, like Katrina or Andrew—fails to convey the intensity of a tropical cyclone. But “Haiyan,” a Super Typhoon about to make landfall over the Philippines, is no ordinary Super Typhoon. Haiyan makes Katrina look like a run-of-the-mill storm. It may be the most intense tropical storm in recorded history. But there’s a catch: We may never know for sure.

The most reliable measurements of tropical cyclone intensity come from Hurricane Hunter aircraft, which fly directly into the eye of the storm, measuring flight-level wind-speeds along the way, and then drop a “dropsonde,” or instrument package down to the surface to measure the air pressure at the surface. Unfortunately, there aren’t air reconnaissance missions into Typhoons in the Western Pacific. So how strong is Haiyan? Take a look at Katrina. You’re looking at an infrared satellite image. Look at Katrina’s eye. MediaGoblin. Skeptic Ink | | Skeptic Ink. AM - Report finds young refugees struggling when they turn 18 30/10/2013. TONY EASTLEY: A new report has found that vulnerable refugees who come to Australia by boat without their parents struggle when they turn 18 and lose their access to specialised support. Unaccompanied children deemed to be refugees are placed in group homes and given case workers, but when they turn 18, they are treated as adults and that means looking after themselves.

Some of them find it tough going, as Felicity Ogilvie reports. FELICITY OGILVIE: Life is good at the moment for a 17-year-old teenager from Afghanistan who's been granted a protection visa. He's living in a group home in Melbourne with lots of support. TEENAGER: We are getting low rent house and they give us a good facility when we are underage, so we are happy from them. FELICITY OGILVIE: What do you think will happen to you once they turn 18?

TEENAGER: You know, we lose our case worker and the rent of our house going to be high, and bills, everything's going to be expensive. CARMEL GUERRA: Extend what you do. Spotlight: Dear Gladys — Ms Annalog. Clothing has such transformative powers in our lives. We use it to change how we look and change how we feel. A good dress can boost confidence and make someone feel just as good as slouching around on the weekend in t-shirts and tracksuit pants after a week spent in the corporate trenches in business combat uniform. However, yhese transformative qualities that clothing possess do more than change how we feel or look. The clothing we choose dictates the lives and income of workers within Australia and all over the world. This power can be used for good and bad. As consumers we are preoccupied with the origin of our food, how it’s produced and what it actually is, why can’t the same be said for our clothing?

The chance of limiting global temperature increases to two degrees Celsius this century are swiftly diminishing, a new United Nations report warned Tuesday, ahead of the body?

S annual climate talks next week. Global greenhouse gas emissions will be eight to 12 billion tonnes higher than target levels in 2020, even if surveyed countries stick to existing emission-reduction agreements, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report. Scientists say avoiding the upper threshold of two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) would avert the worst affects of climate change, but according to the report would likely require a slashing of emissions by 14 percent in 2020. "The window of opportunity of trying to meet this two-degree target threshold is, in a sense, becoming ever-more elusive," said UNEP chief Achim Steiner.

UNEP officials presented the report at a news conference in Berlin Tuesday. "Achieving the two-degree goal is with every year less possible. Why I probably won’t be live tweeting much more of the Hacking Trial | Fall of the House of Murdoch. First off, a big thank you for reading this, and for following me on twitter during the opening statements for the Hacking Trial. lt was an honour to be there and report it (even if my keyboard and carpal tunnel says otherwise). I attended many of the pre-trial hearings, and obviously know a lot of background to the saga from researching my book – but being there in court was as electrifying as it sounded.

I know I got some names wrong, and had to trim a lot of quotes to fit into 140 characters – but I felt immediacy trumped comprehensiveness in the circumstances. Maybe it’s my histrionic background as a dramatist, but I wanted you to feel like you were there too. Throughout my covearge I also have tried to be impartial, and actually tweeted more quotes per minute from the Coulson’s defence barristers opening statement that Edis. However, though impartial, I can’t pretend to be neutral – who can if they care about journalism? As a freelancer I have no retainer to cover my time there. (CNN) -- Afghanistan's presidential election season is underway. In a sign of genuine political progress, the government has begun accepting nominations for candidates to succeed President Hamid Karzai. Nothing is more important for Afghanistan than building on the liberalizing achievements of the past decade and preventing a slide back toward repression.

This is why it is crucial to retain and expand the hard-won rights of Afghan women. Paula Dobriansky Melanne Verveer. Womens Rights. Now the issue of gender equality is openly discussed in Britain and laws have been passed which help to maintain equality. This has not always been the case. During the whole of the nineteenth century, women had no political rights though there had been some movement in other areas to advance the rights of women. In 1839, a law was passed which stated that if a marriage broke down and the parents separated, children under seven years of age should stay with their mother. In 1857, women could divorce husbands who were cruel to them or husbands who had left them. In 1870, women were allowed to keep money they had earned.

In 1891, women could not be forced to live with husbands unless they wished to. These were very important laws which advanced the rights of women. This view was supported by Queen Victoria - she hardly did anything to advance the cause of women. GEN 110: Computers and Society - An Introduction to Ethical Issues in Computing. Dr. R. M. Siegfried A General Introduction to the Social, Ethical and Professional Issues in Computing The digital computer is a key technology of the modern era and has been central and essential to key operations in modern industrial society, including manufacturing, transport and distribution, government, the military, health services, education and research. We have also discovered that we are vulnerable to their malfunction and misuse, creating problems such as computer crime, software theft, hacking, viruses, invasions of privacy, an over- reliance on intelligent machines and workplace stress, each of which has created one or more ethical dilemmas for the computer profession. Most technological problems these days get blamed on computers including power supplies failing, phone systems going down, air traffic controls seizing up, traffic lights on the blink. Computers have been the cause of several major blunders: Computers may figured indirectly in other catastrophes: Computer crime.

Force feeding in Guantanamo: Why doctors shouldn't participate. Nearly every physician regards himself as an ethical practitioner. Nearly none of us are, at least not fully. There is no bright line that separates ethical from improper behavior. Indeed, it is because the boundary is fuzzy that ethicists and the rest of us wrestle with contentious controversies. It is, therefore, expected that ethicists are divided on many issues, much as the U.S. Supreme Court is often split in its decisions. If the Court’s cases were easily decided, then most of its decisions would be unanimous. Finding the balance. While there are some bedrock ethical principles that should remain immutable, the field needs some breathing space to accommodate to societal changes and new research findings. Medical professionals confront ethical tension regularly. There have been physicians present during enhanced interrogation events (read: torture) ostensibly to guide interrogators against causing permanent serious injury or worse.

Text messages are the ultimate convenience, used by people worldwide to communicate, often to notify friends and families of their whereabouts.

In many countries, new technologies can serve to enhance individual liberty. But technology does not always liberate. Last month, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia expanded a system in which it sends Saudi men text messages, known as SMS, to notify them when their wives or other "dependents" leave the country, as part of its regulations requiring women to obtain permission from their guardians to travel. In a twist that proves technology's power, Manal al-Sharif, the woman who in 2010 launched a campaign to obtain for women the right to drive, used Twitter to inform the world of the story. In Saudi Arabia, women are treated as legal minors, no matter how old they are. Saudi women can't study, drive or make education decisions for themselves or their children without the permission of a male "guardian" - a father, husband, brother or son.

When Placed in the Wrong Hands, Social Media is Being Used to Oppress Women Around the World. Videos spread across the internet this week of women in Saudi Arabia hitting the road in protest of the country’s ban on female drivers, offering the world yet another example of how technology can be cleverly employed to advocate a cause. But while many have heralded technology’s capacity to function as a liberating tool to enhance the visibility and logistical capacities of social justice movements, numerous examples from around the world have made it clear that it can also be used to oppress vulnerable populations. This paradox has never been as clear as in Saudi Arabia, where government officials and gender activists are fighting a battle to determine which camp will use technology more effectively for the promotion of its aims.

Women around the world use modern technology to organize and develop feminist discourses, and over the past decade cyberfeminism has become a movement in its own right that has inspired numerous conferences, articles, and studies. Syrian mother reunited with children inside refugee camp. On arrival, she has difficulty gaining access to the children, who are reluctant to see their mother. "I asked Samira, 'who do you like, your old mother or your new one? '" a neighbouring child tells Amira. "She said 'the new one'. " But the four children are eventually brought into the room where Amira is waiting. "You don't want to come to me? Will Global Coal Boom Go Bust As Climate Concerns Increase? by Fen Montaigne. 15 Apr 2013: The Future of Coal: An e360 Report by fen montaigne Today, the global economy annually consumes at least 80 times more coal than was burned in 1850 at the height of the Industrial Revolution. The International Energy Agency said that global coal use — now close to 8 billion tons a year — could increase by 65 percent by 2035 if current energy trends continue. A recent independent analysis reported that 1,200 new coal-fired power plants are being proposed worldwide, three-quarters of them in India and China. The planet still has so much coal underground that if industrial economies mine and burn this fossil fuel at current rates, known reserves would last for more than a century.

The problem, as the world’s climate scientists point out, is that to continue burning coal at the ever-expanding pace of recent years means that there is little hope of holding global temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
