Is MIT Obsolete? Today’s advanced research and education institutions are essential to tackling the grand challenges facing our planet, but they’ve been based on an implicit assumption of technological scarcity — advances in those technologies now allow these activities to expand far beyond the boundaries of a campus. Research requires funding, facilities, and people; I came to MIT to get access to all of these. State-of-the-art research infrastructure, large library collections, and world-class faculty are all expensive resources that limit admission slots, classroom space, and research positions.

But what would happen if these things were no longer scarce? That’s increasingly the case. The Internet has already enabled distance learning, providing video links to classrooms and remote access to online content (such as MIT’s OpenCourseWare). By digitizing not just the communication of ideas but also the fabrication of things, the campus can now effectively come to the student. SEEDMAGAZINE.COM. Board of Trustees | X PRIZE Foundation. Born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, James Cameron grew up in the historic village of Chippawa, near Niagara Falls.

In 1971, he moved to Brea, California where he studied physics at Fullerton Junior College while working as a machinist and, later, a truck driver. Cameron quit his trucking job in 1978 and raised money from local dentists to produce a 35mm short film. The visual effects in this film led to work on Roger Corman's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980). In 1983, Cameron wrote three scripts: RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART 2, ALIENS, and THE TERMINATOR. He directed THE TERMINATOR, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, in 1984. Cameron subsequently directed ALIENS (1986), then wrote and directed THE ABYSS (1989).

His films have blazed new trails in visual effects and set numerous performance records both domestically and abroad. Cameron has also been an avid scuba diver since 1969. As an explorer, Cameron has been equally fascinated by outer as well as inner space. Neil Gershenfeld's Brief Biography. Neil Gershenfeld's Home Page.
