How Many Links Is Too Many? There's a long-standing debate in SEO about the maximum number of links that you should place on any given page.

How Many Links Is Too Many?

If you use the SEOmoz PRO Campaign Manager, you may have seen a warning that looks something like this: Digging deeper into the "Too Many On-Page Links" warning, you'll see the message: You should avoid having too many (roughly defined as more than 100) hyperlinks on any given page. A number of people have asked where we came up with 100 as the magic number and whether this is a hard limit or just a suggestion. I'm going to talk a bit about the history, whether that history still applies, and what the potential consequences are of breaking the 100-link barrier.

Where Did We Get 100? The 100-link limit actually came from sources within Google and has been restated for years, as recently as a March 2009 post by Matt Cutts, in which he quotes the Google guidelines as saying: Matt Cutts nous livre les secrets de Google.. ou pas.

Visual Page Segmentation and the Effects on Linkbuilding

There are still a lot of SEOs out there that want templated (e.g. blogroll, footer) links over inline contextual ones. This is fine if you are striking a balance in a natural link profile or looking at the link as an advertising effort more than an SEO effort. But that hasn’t been the case in recent discussions I’ve had so I wanted to resurface this issue. The major search engines, in an effort to refine the quality of search results, are looking more closely at how a target page is organized. The indexer will parse the page’s layout and identify what it thinks are the most important blocks, and give those blocks preference in the index. This smart idea by Yahoo, Google and Microsoft may have profound implications for webmasters — and the outcomes may not be so stellar for webmasters caught unprepared.

The Chaos of Link Building. SEO in 2011: Content versus Links. This is a guest post by Tyler Davis We read a lot in Leo Di Milo’s blog about the importance of incorporating social factors even in banal niches like toilet seats.

SEO in 2011: Content versus Links

How do they attract attention to the banal niches in real life? Hot chicks(Hot Chicks holding toilet seats could go viral), Celebrities, and humor. The first two methods of attracting attention cost money unless you obtain the photos illegally or photoshop them or maybe you’re a hot chick yourself. The last one has the most potential but humor blogs have enough trouble going viral on their own never mind a toilet seat humor site. But still in 2011, I’d say the way to incorporate Leo Di Milo’s social strategies in banal niches is to incorporate humor.

Creating Hybrid Staging Areas for Legacy CMS and Non SEO Friendly CRM Platforms. After the fact SEO work-arounds create major challenges for websites entrenched with antiquated systems using CMS (content management systems) or custom CRM (customer relationship management) platforms for portals or e-commerce websites.

Creating Hybrid Staging Areas for Legacy CMS and Non SEO Friendly CRM Platforms

I must admit, I am an advocate of SEO from the start and building the platform with an optimization goal in mind. However, often enough it isn’t until it is too late that businesses realize that their custom platform is great (for end users) however search engines cannot see it due to programming preferences, data platforms or coding etiquette that exists outside the bounds of being considered SEO friendly. The thing to remember in these circumstances is, if user agents (search engine spiders that scour the web for data) cannot see or index it, there are no respective rankings. Things such as: The point being, for every problem there is a solution, otherwise it wouldn’t be a problem, and it is not a solution if it causes more problems.
