Computing in the net of possibilities. (Phys.org) -- Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen have developed an entirely new principle for information processing.

Computing in the net of possibilities

The complex network computer now stands as an alternative to the other possibilities in data processing - such as the conventional computer or the quantum computer. The fundamental requirement is a system, for instance a laser, with oscillating elements that can interact with one another. The researchers were able to demonstrate that the characteristic dynamics of such a system can be cleverly harnessed to perform the full range of logical operations. The complex network computer can even perform some tasks, such as the coarse sorting of numbers, considerably faster than conventional computers. Furthermore, the researchers have managed to take a first step in programming a robot according to the new principle. A computer is much more than simply hardware. Researchers produce first complete computer model of an organism. July 19, 2012 A mammoth effort has produced a complete computational model of the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium, opening the door for biological computer-aided design.

Eureqa

Traditional machine learning techniques like neural networks and regression trees are capable tools for prediction, but become impractical when "solving the problem" involves understanding how you arrive at the answer. Eureqa uses a breakthrough machine learning technique called Symbolic Regression to unravel the intrinsic relationships in data and explain them as simple math.

Using Symbolic Regression, Eureqa can create incredibly accurate predictions that are easily explained and shared with others. Over 35,000 people have relied on Eureqa to answer their most challenging questions, in industries ranging from Oil & Gas through Life Sciences and Big Box Retail. Try Eureqa for yourself - it's free for 30 days.

Scientists collect data; analyse it; try to make sense of it all; and publish their findings in a scientific journal.

Digital tools for the scientific endeavour – one response to the changing world of science

Right? Well yes, but it’s not always as simple as that. The way in which science is conducted has changed dramatically over the past couple of decades. Many scientists now collect terabytes of data, which would be impossible to include in a printed scientific article. Network Enabled Research: Maximise scale and connectivity, minimise friction. Image via Wikipedia Prior to all the nonsense with the Research Works Act, I had been having a discussion with Heather Morrison about licenses and Open Access and peripherally the principle of requiring specific licenses of authors.

I realized then that I needed to lay out the background thinking that leads me to where I am. The path that leads me here is one built on a technical understanding of how networks functional and what their capacity can be. In cancer science, many discoveries don't hold up. Antioxidants and Exercise: More Harm Than Good? Multivitamin supplementation has been getting a rough ride in the literature, as evidence emerges that routine supplementation for most is, at best, unnecessary. Some individual vitamins are earning their own unattractive risk/benefit profiles: Products like folic acid, calcium, and beta-carotene all seem inadvisable for routine supplementation in the absence of deficiency or medical indication. Vitamin E, already on the watch list, looks increasingly problematic, with data recently published confirming the suspected association of supplementation with an elevated risk of prostate cancer.

Reading through the vitamin posts here at SBM, one issue comes through repeatedly: The danger of assuming therapeutic benefits in the absence of confirmatory evidence. Evolved Analytics' DataModeler. The technology has been developed to withstand the challenges of real world — in addition to handling problems of too much data, too little data, correlated data, or noisy data, DataModeler respects the cost and timeliness issues associated with modeling development. DataModeler encompasses a plethora of functions and functionality targeted at simplifying the model development life cycle, including data exploration, model development and model management. Furthermore, since the modeling rarely exists in a vacuum, we paid specific attention to model deployment, usage and maintenance — DataModeler also provides an infrastructure for the entire modeling life cycle with an emphasis on modeling efficiency, accuracy, robustness and ease-of-use.

DataModeler features state-of-the-art algorithms for symbolic regression via genetic programming. [EDIT] Added FAQ here: Gallery here: This weekend I decided to play around a bit with genetic programming and put evolution to the test, the test of fine art :-) I created a small program that keeps a string of DNA for polygon rendering. The procedure of the program is quite simple: 0) Setup a random DNA string (application start) 1) Copy the current DNA sequence and mutate it slightly 2) Use the new DNA to render polygons onto a canvas 3) Compare the canvas to the source image 4) If the new painting looks more like the source image than the previous painting did, then overwrite the current DNA with the new DNA 5) repeat from 1.
