Le spot le plus réputé de la péninsule pour nager avec ces énormes tortues en toute liberté est sans aucun doute la plage d’Akumal, située sur la Riviera Maya, entre Playa del Carmen et Tulum. Ce fut donc notre premier arrêt lors de notre roadtrip. Nous avions lu sur plusieurs sites internet que depuis début 2017, nager avec les tortues à Akumal n’était plus possible gratuitement… On a lu de tout: interdit, gilet de sauvetage obligatoire à louer sur place, ou passage par un opérateur local pour une (chère) excursion accompagnée… Nous avons tout de même été voir ce qu’il en était de nos propres yeux et nous avons bien fait puisque – en tout cas lors de notre visite en mai 2017 – il n’en était rien et nous avons pu passer deux heures avec ces tortues sans débourser un seul peso !
