I prompted a flurry of PostGIS hate (and some love) on Twitter last week, documented via Storify . I’ve been using PostGIS for around 2 years now both at Stamen and before that at The Washington Post. Let me say upfront that PostGIS is amazing and is definitely in the top 5 best FOSS4G (free and open source software for geo) out there. It is a super powerful spatial data store that is free to download, install, and use (even in commercial projects!). It’s can also be mind numbingly difficult to install and use. It doesn’t matter how awesome something is unless it’s usable.

Some of these data sites are more specific by subject or by region than others. However, it is suggested to first try the links under the “National and International Data” heading before going to more specific sites. The National and International sites are more generic in some instances and may have the data that you are trying to locate. When searching these sites, the keywords of “GIS” and the “subject” in question are usually good starting points if you are having difficulty.

HYDRO1k is a geographic database developed to provide comprehensive and consistent global coverage of topographically derived data sets, including streams, drainage basins and ancillary layers derived from the USGS' 30 arc-second digital elevation model of the world (GTOPO30) . HYDRO1k provides a suite of geo-referenced data sets, both raster and vector, which will be of value for all users who need to organize, evaluate, or process hydrologic information on a continental scale. Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) , the HYDRO1k project's goal is to provide to users, on a continent by continent basis, hydrologically correct DEMs along with ancillary data sets for use in continental and regional scale modeling and analyses. Detailed descriptions of the processing steps involved in development of the HYDRO1k data sets can be found in the Readme U.S.
