Flipped Classroom Scratch Programming Lessons. This fall I began teaching Scratch programming to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and spent lots of valuable class time “presenting lectures” to my students.
I quickly realized that Scratch programming would be an ideal subject for flipped teaching. Rather than devote class time to telling my students how to make a cat jump or how to make a bat fly, students could watch the videos at home and then start working and experimenting within the Scratch interface. Class time could then be dedicated to working on projects, answering questions that the students come across, and watching or re-watching the tutorial videos. A lecture is essentially a non-linear format. While students MAY ask questions or ask for clarification on a topic, I believe that few students are willing to raise their hand and admit that they need something repeated.
The non-linear format of a YouTube video allows students to pause, rewind, or fast forward their teacher without having to raise their hand. This has been great for me and I'm really enjoying getting to teach kids all the way from age 4 to 11. With the switch from ICT to Computing and the increased focus on computer science, coding was naturally top of my list of content to develop and ensure progression across each year group. Our school was already in a great position since my predecessor had begun including the use of Scratch, Kodu and other software back in 2011.
My aim though was to seek a wider range of software to help deliver unique learning opportunities in each year group. The release of Scratch Jr this summer really couldn't have come at a better time. For the uninitiated, Scratch Jr is the streamlined app version of the acclaimed visual programming language developed at MIT. Scratch Jr. Tutorials for Primary Students. Last week, I encouraged you to participate in this year’s Hour of Code.
I know that guiding a classroom of students through an hour of programming can sound intimidating, particularly if you aren’t experienced in it yourself. The secret is to do as I have – admit to yourself that you know nothing and your students are smarter than you. Trust me, it makes life easier and a lot more enjoyable Any grade level can do the Hour of Code. Code.org makes it very easy to moderate lessons for all ages and levels of experience. Esta app, que está pensada para niños de 5 a 8 años, integra personajes de series animadas de PBS, como por ejemplo Wild Kratts, WordGirl, entre otros. Los niños podrán darle vida a más de 150 personajes moviendo los bloques de colores, y así crear sus propios cuentos que pueden combinarse con diferentes diseños. Además, cuenta con algunas opciones que permiten darle más emoción a los juegos y cuentos. Por ejemplo, pueden utilizar la herramienta de grabación y ponerle voz a los personajes. O si desean, pueden crear sus propios personajes utilizando las funciones de edición.
