A quantum theory of dreams? More familiar examples include "gestalt" images that can look like either a vase or two faces, as here, but not both at the same time and the Necker cube, where a line drawing does image flips because the drawing of the cube can appear to go into the screen, or pop out of it.

A quantum theory of dreams?

There has long been a feeling that by understanding how the brain switches between these versions scientists may shed light on how the conscious experience is generated. Prof Manousakis has now laid out a theory of how a quantum effect could influence image flips in binocular rivalry studies and then, as good science demands, made some predictions.

His predictions are based on the rate that nerve cells fired in the brain. It turns out that the hallucinogenic drug LSD can slow the firing rate of brain cells and, when he factored this effect into his quantum model, he predicted the flip rates would change too. This is precisely what subjects who took LSD reported in experiments conducted by another group. Smoking Mirrors. Gold, Silver, Precious Metals. Online_Books/Isis_Unviled_Vol_1_V1.3.pdf. Chimpanzees seem to know what's on other chimps' minds

The apes were more likely to make warning calls when they spotted a venomous snake if others in their troop had not seen the danger, researchers found. As chimps in the know arrived at the scene, they passed the warning on to others who lagged behind but were still within earshot. Video footage of wild chimps foraging in Uganda's Budongo forest show apes at the front of their groups jumping with surprise on spotting a model snake lying camouflaged in the undergrowth. When the chimps regained their composure, they called out with repeated "hoos" to alert those behind them that a threat lay ahead. They made calls less often when other chimps already knew of the danger. Neutral Monism. First published Thu Feb 3, 2005; substantive revision Thu Jan 28, 2010 Neutral monism is a monistic metaphysics.

Neutral Monism

It holds that ultimate reality is all of one kind. To this extent neutral monism is in agreement with idealism and materialism. What distinguishes neutral monism from its better known monistic rivals is the claim that the intrinsic nature of ultimate reality is neither mental nor physical. Gold cyanidation. Gold cyanidation (also known as the cyanide process or the MacArthur-Forrest process) is a metallurgical technique for extracting gold from low-grade ore by converting the gold to a water soluble coordination complex.

Gold cyanidation

It is the most commonly used process for gold extraction.[1] Production of reagents for mineral processing to recover gold, copper, zinc and silver represents approximately 13% of cyanide consumption globally, with the remaining 87% of cyanide used in other industrial processes such as plastics, adhesives, and pesticides.[2] Due to the highly poisonous nature of cyanide, the process is controversial and its usage is banned in a number of countries and territories.

History[edit] In 1783, Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered that gold dissolved in aqueous solutions of cyanide. He had earlier discovered cyanide salts. [edit] Cyanide Leaching - for recreational gold prospecting. The first chemical leaching of gold occurred in the late 1800’s with the introduction on the market of "DuPont Mining Salts".

Cyanide Leaching - for recreational gold prospecting

It did extract gold as gold chloride. It was slow and cumbersome to utilize. Just a little later, around the turn of the century, it was discovered that gold could be dissolved in solutions of sodium cyanide. This method was superior because of its simplicity, availability of chemicals, and low cost. After all, who knew what "Mining Salts" were composed of? The Equinox. Liquation. Liquation is a metallurgical method for separating metals from an ore or alloy.

The material must be heated until one of the metals starts to melt and drain away from the other and can be collected. This method was largely used to remove lead containing silver from copper, but it can also be used to remove antimony minerals from ore, and refine tin. Separating copper and silver[edit] The first known use of Liquation on a large scale was in Germany in the mid-15th century. Metal workers had long known that Central European copper ore was rich in silver, so it was only a matter of time until a method was discovered that could separate the two metals.[1] Geomancy. Johannes Kepler

A key figure in the 17th century scientific revolution, he is best known for his laws of planetary motion, based on his works Astronomia nova, Harmonices Mundi, and Epitome of Copernican Astronomy. These works also provided one of the foundations for Isaac Newton's theory of universal gravitation. During his career, Kepler was a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, Austria, where he became an associate of Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg. Later he became an assistant to astronomer Tycho Brahe, and eventually the imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II and his two successors Matthias and Ferdinand II. He was also a mathematics teacher in Linz, Austria, and an adviser to General Wallenstein. Early years[edit] Sirius. Sirius appears bright because of both its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth.

At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), as determined by the Hipparcos astrometry satellite,[5][19][20] the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbors. Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System, so it will slightly increase in brightness over the next 60,000 years. After that time its distance will begin to recede, but it will continue to be the brightest star in the Earth's sky for the next 210,000 years.[21] Paracelsus. Paracelsus (/ˌpærəˈsɛlsəs/; born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, 11 November or 17 December 1493 – 24 September 1541) was a Swiss German[3] Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and general occultist.[4] He founded the discipline of toxicology.[5] He is also known as a revolutionary for insisting upon using observations of nature, rather than looking to ancient texts, in open and radical defiance of medical practice of his day.[5] He is also credited for giving zinc its name, calling it zincum.[6][7] Modern psychology often also credits him for being the first to note that some diseases are rooted in psychological illness.[8] His personality was stubborn and independent.

He grew progressively more frustrated and bitter as he became more embattled as a reformer.[9] Paracelsus' most important legacy is likely his critique of the scholastic methods in medicine, science and theology. Pentagonal antiprism. In geometry, the pentagonal antiprism is the third in an infinite set of antiprisms formed by an even-numbered sequence of triangle sides closed by two polygon caps. It consists of two pentagons joined to each other by a ring of 10 triangles for a total of 12 faces. Hence, it is a non-regular dodecahedron. Geometry[edit] Platonic solid. History[edit] Icosahedron.
