Vensko's Reading Workshop: "With the introduction of choice, a child's world changes! " (Boushey & Moser, p. 20) The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just-right reading level. So, during Reading Workshop in our classroom, students have time each day to practice, practice, practice! Students are carefully taught how to choose a good-fit (just-right) book to read. In addition, we use the McGraw-Hill Florida Treasures reading program and you can see how I incorporate the basal into the daily focus (mini) lessons. My CAFE Bulletin Board At the beginning of the year, I assess my readers using a variety of methods to include: informal observations, DEA, and DRA2. I recently presented a two day "Introduction to Daily 5" workshop for over 100 teachers in my district. I receive many emails from teachers around the nation about how to incorporate the basal series within a Daily 5 framework. 1. with a buddy (read to someone) What Does Mrs.

This video walks you throughstep-by-step to success! I looked around my classroom and realized that my students were not getting as much quality, on-level, independent reading time as I would like. I kept thinking, “How can they become better readers if they don’t have time to read?” I searched the internet for ideas. Lots of book buckets ideas, gimmicks and stuff floated by my screen. Then I came across a book called The Daily Five . I ordered it – and read the whole thing the day it arrived! Perfect! Want more information on The Daily 5? So, I talked to my teammate and we tweaked it to fit our students, our needs and our requirements. TheDailyCafe.com.

I really like the CAFE as it helps stucture the reader's workshop a bit more for me. I also like how the CAFE focuses on the four major areas of reading. Kathy Collins book Growing readers has great minilessons especially for beginning the reading workshop. CAFE doesn't really give you lessons for what good readers do. Basically when I teach minilessons I use Kathy Collins book, TC, and CAFE. Minilesson - Strategy (10 minutes) Read to Self (30 minutes) Partner Reading (10 minutes 3 times a week - I lost my way this year for partnership work as I was trying other things) Minilesson - Word Study (10 minutes) Word Sorts - 15 minutes Read Aloud - 20-30 minutes (I use Isabel Beck's vocabulary model - I like the CAFE vocab lessons, but I feel kids need to be directly taught words) If I were to teach kindergarten I would most likely teach a little bit more large group focusing on phonemic awareness and phonics.
