Roanoke Canal Half Marathon: HISTORY. The Roanoke Canal is nearly 200 years old.

Roanoke Canal Half Marathon: HISTORY

After the American War of Independence, the young nation’s founding fathers sought to open trade and transportation into their western frontier. In North Carolina and Virginia, that meant developing the Roanoke River into a water highway. By 1815, an agreement between the two states established the Roanoke River Navigation Company and charged it with clearing the river and building a canal around the “great falls” near present-day Roanoke Rapids. In 1823, the canal’s channel, locks, culverts, and aqueduct were complete and for the first time boats – known by their French name bateau or batteau – could pass the Piedmont’s fall line and travel westward into the interior. This created a new destination for trade and commerce at present-day Weldon where ships coming from the Albemarle met with the batteau coming downstream. In 1882, new investors purchased the canal and developed it into a source of water power to generate electricity.

White Lake Half. Swim: The basic reason that both White Lake races (the Half and the Sprint) have become so popular over the years is the lake itself.

White Lake Half

White Lake is one of the finest lakes you will ever have the pleasure to swim in – a perfect oval, two miles long and one mile across. The lake which is fed by subterranean springs is crystal clear with a sand bottom – about nine feet deep out in the very middle. Most mornings, White Lake is so perfectly flat; you’d swear you were looking at a sheet of ice. This is an in-water start with participants lining up with the end of the two piers/docks at the NCFFA Center. The swim course is a triangular shaped course. Bike: The bike course is a 56 mile loop featuring minimum turns. Inside-Out Sports Olympic Triathlon at Beaverdam- Wake Forest, NC, Events News Wetsuit rentals available throught Inside-Out Sports!
