LA Progressive Social Justice Magazine. San Diego Labor Day Rally – ‘Not a day to celebrate but a day to agitate!’ Hundreds gathered for the Rally for the Jobless along Broadway. (Photo by Patty Jones.) Under gray skies, over 350 people gathered along Broadway yesterday in downtown San Diego at a Labor Day “Rally for the Jobless.” Organized by MoveOn and Rebuild the American Dream, the noon event was designed to gather unemployed San Diegans and put pressure on the White House and Congress for jobs. Bob Filner excites the crowd. Waving signs, banners and flags the demonstrators dominated that block of downtown for a couple of hours, with chants, horns honking in support, and then with a rally where many local politicians spoke.

The gathering was energized when a sea of yellow-shirts worn by grocery workers and their supporters marched into the crowd, chanting “We want a contract, and we want it now!” Congressional reps Bob Filner and Susan Davis spoke, as did State Senator Juan Vargas, along with Lori Saldana who is running against Brian Bilbray in newly-drawn Congressional district. For most Americans, the only significance of Labor Day is that it concludes a three day weekend. For Kirk Artley, it means he has about six weeks left of employment.

On Aug. 24, RR Donnelley, a Chicago-based megacorporation that claims to be “the world’s premier full-service provider of print and related services,” told Artley and the other 283 workers at the Bloomsburg, Pa., plant that “economic conditions” forced the closing of the book printing facility. The workers said they would take significant pay cuts if that would save the plant. RR Donnelley rejected the offer.

Most of the workers live in Columbia County, a small rural county of about 65,000, with unemployment about 8 percent, slightly less than the national rate. Adding 284 persons would significantly increase that rate. Under the termination agreement, the workers, both management and labor, wouldn’t have priority rights to bid for jobs at any other plant. By federal law, there has to be a 60-day notice to the workers. DownWithTyranny! BearFlagBlue | Nor*Cal Style. East Bay Attitude. Progressive Politic. California Budget Bites. Calbuzz. LA Observed front page. Speak Out California Weblog. It was an amazing thing to be part of, an entire city downtown occupied, then a huge march that shut down a major port. Oakland was #occupied! This was a game changer, a turning point. What happened in Oakland was a very big deal. On the same Wednesday there were big, big #occupy events in several other cities. Occupy Oakland I arrived at Oscar Grant Plaza in Oakland yesterday about 11:30am.

At the corner of 14th and Broadway there was a stage set up with speakers throughout the day. There was a harmonious energy with people of all ethnicities, ages, cultures and from all over the area. The main action of the day began at 4PM as the first of two marches left for the Port of Oakland. The scene at the port was just astonishing. Finally people started tricking out, heading back to the occupy center at Oscar Grant Plaza. And, of course, later a number of anarchists started a bonfire and had to be cleared out with tear gas.
