Positive Changes

Facebook Twitter

These days it is way too easy to focus on "what's wrong" in the world. It gets a lot of media attention and discussed much more than the positve and progressive changes that have improved the quality of life for even just one person, let alone a class of people.

I need some balance. Hopefully I will see links to concrete efforts to improve a person's life (no new age-y or religious stuff please! Stick to the issue) Society 3 0.

In Case You Missed It, A Very Curious Google Search Pattern Happened This Year. How To Clean and Season Old, Rusty Cast Iron Skillets Apartment Therapy Tutorials. My dad has used the same cast iron skillet for as long as I can remember. Once, he forgot and left it heating on the stove. It turned orange (yes, THAT'S hot!) And cracked in half. My dad's devotion was such that he took the two halves out to the garage and welded it back together. That was at least 15 years ago and the skillet is as good as ever. So I'm sure you can understand the horror I felt when I unpacked my own cookware (pictured above) after it had been in storage for 18 months!

There are a lot of tutorials out there for seasoning your cast iron, but not a lot about getting rust off. Walmart Warehouse Strikers to Return to Work with Full Back Pay « WWJ News. Warehouse Workers for Justice Press Release In an historic victory, all striking Roadlink workers at Walmart’s Elwood warehouse have won their principal demand for an end to illegal retaliation against workers protesting poor conditions. They will return to work with their full pay while they were out on strike. Workers will return to work and continue the fight for safe working conditions, fair pay for all hours worked and an end to discrimination. During the 21 day strike, strikers have received a tremendous outpouring of support.

On Oct. 1st strikers and their supporters succeeded in shutting down Walmart’s largest distribution center in North America, while clergy, community and labor leaders blocked the road leading out of the warehouse to support workers on strike at the Walmart warehouse in Elwood, near Joliet. The rally brought Walmart’s distribution system into the public eye to protest unfair labor practices and other abuses in the nation’s largest inland port.

Burma. Winds of change in Myanmar. When former Prime Minister Thein Sein was elected president of Myanmar earlier this year, observers saw him as a puppet of the old regime. They considered the November elections to be nothing more than window dressing and predicted that the military, which had been in the driving seat for over four decades, would still be pulling the strings and running the country in much the same old way as before - out of step with the times and its own people. Six months into his presidency however, the new president is beginning to prove his critics wrong. Myanmar appears to be moving away from the discredited policies of the past and adopting more open policies. Recent press reports indicate growing signs of palpable change in the country. Expectations and hopes that real change may be on the horizon have been heightened by the statements of senior European Union and United States officials who visited the country recently.

By Andrew JonesWednesday, November 30, 2011 12:32 EDT In a heart warming story just in time for the holiday season, a 103-year-old woman in Atlanta avoided foreclosure of her home Tuesday afternoon, thanks entirely to the kindness of strangers.

According to WSBTV Atlanta, movers hired by Deutsche Bank AG and police were ready to go through with the bank’s request to remove Vita Lee and her 83-year old daughter from their home. However, when they first got sight of Lee, they had a change of heart and declined to go through with it. “I saw the sheriffs who came to put them out, take off and leave,” community activist Michael Langford said to WSBTV. ”I gave all glory to God.” Lee, whose daughter was rushed to the hospital to the hospital from the stress of possibly facing an eviction, was relieved that the movers and police had compassion for their condition. “I know God said when things go wrong, he’ll make it right,” she said. Muslims hate America and Obama does too.

In a further attempt to destroy America from the inside, the Muslim president has declared this holiday season the Kwanza season. Kwanza was made up in 1966 by Ronald McKinley Everett. Everett changed his name to Maulana Karenga (meaning down with whitey) in an attempt to disrespect America and his parents. Karenga was a major figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s and co-founded with Hakim Jamal the black nationalist and social change organization US which means “Us Black people”.

He remains a controversial figure due to violence between US and the Black Panthers as well as a felony conviction. New Christmas trend: Paying off strangers’ K-Mart layaway accounts. By Stephen C. WebsterFriday, December 16, 2011 11:00 EDT Here’s your cup of Christmas cheer: In what appears to be either a trend of random kindness or a brilliant viral advertising campaign, anonymous donors have taken to paying off poor families’ K-Mart layaway accounts in dozens of instances spanning several states. It’s gotten to be enough of a trend that The Associated Press took notice, after stories about Secret Santas began popping up in Michigan, Indiana and Montana. Often times, it’s accounts with lots of childrens’ toys or clothing that the donors are targeting.

In one case, the AP recounted the story of a woman in Indianapolis who walked into a K-Mart and paid off about 50 layaway accounts, purchased two cart-loads of toys for one woman, then handed out $50 bills as she left the store. In other cases, donors are making small payments on accounts that are past due, giving the retailer just enough to prevent the items from being returned to inventory.
