In Search of Lost Cheekiness, An Introduction to Peter Sloterdijk’s “Critique of Cynical Reason” Stefan Lorenz Sorgner In this essay I wish to give an introduction to the first main work of a major German contemporary philosopher - Peter Sloterdijk. He was born in Karlsruhe in 1947. 36 years later, in 1983, he became the shooting star of German philosophy with the publication of his early main work ‘The Critique of Cynical Reason’ with which I will be concerned in this paper. There are, however, also quite a few people, who would object to me calling Sloterdijk a philosopher, because, according to them, Sloterdijk lacks academic rigour, and deals with topics not normally discussed in Academic philosophy. Still, Habermas takes him seriously [J.

The following provides an updated diagram and some further notes pertaining to my three-part article “What A Bodymind Can Do.” The earlier parts can be read here: part 1 , part 2 , part 3 . (Please note that this version has corrected a minor error in the originally posted article, and added a bit more information at the end.) “What A Bodymind Can Do” was an attempt to map the possibilities of human perception, action, and realization by synthesizing Shinzen Young’s systematization of mindfulness meditation practices (primarily Buddhist, but with reference to others) with a process-relational framework rooted in Whiteheadian process metaphysics and the triadic phenomenology of C. S. Peirce. The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. Alfred North Whitehead, Process and Reality , p. 53 [Free Press, 1969]; the painting is the School of Athens ( Scuola di Atene ) by Raphael, with Plato, pointing up, and Aristotle, gesturing down, in the middle [ note ]. BILL MURRAY : "What did you study?" SCARLETT JOHANSSON : "Philosophy." BILL MURRAY : "Yeah, there's a good buck in that racket."
History of Philosophy
We had stayed up all night, my friends and I, under hanging mosque lamps with domes of filigreed brass, domes starred like our spirits, shining like them with the prisoned radiance of electric hearts. For hours we had trampled our atavistic ennui into rich oriental rugs, arguing up to the last confines of logic and blackening many reams of paper with our frenzied scribbling. An immense pride was buoying us up, because we felt ourselves alone at that hour, alone, awake, and on our feet, like proud beacons or forward sentries against an army of hostile stars glaring down at us from their celestial encampments. Alone with stokers feeding the hellish fires of great ships, alone with the black spectres who grope in the red-hot bellies of locomotives launched on their crazy courses, alone with drunkards reeling like wounded birds along the city walls.

Kein Bestandteil Sein - An FT Tribute to Einstürzende Neubauten Do you know who Einstürzende Neubauten are? If not, take a minute to look them up. The Internet will tell you all about the EN legend. The icy, post-industrial wilderness of post-WWII Berlin; the home-made instruments; the radical performances; the fierce reputation of both the music and the bandmembers, especially their notoriously temperamental leader, Blixa Bargeld.Abe Stone: Papers

1. "What is metaphysics?" The question awakens expectations of a discussion about metaphysics. This we will forgo.P M C Founded in 1990 as an experiment in scholarly publishing on the Internet, Postmodern Culture has become the leading electronic journal of interdisciplinary thought on contemporary cultures, publishing the work of such noted authors and critics as Kathy Acker, Charles Bernstein, Bruce Robbins, bell hooks, and Susan Howe. Recently, Cassie Herbert (one of my grad students at Georgetown) and I have been thinking and writing about what we have dubbed peripheral speech . Peripheral speech is a kind of speech within expert communities – that is, any communities held together by shared expertise combined with a shared social identity. These could be professional communities (tort lawyers, physicists, philosophers, philosophers of race, experimental philosophers…) or avocational communities (trekkies, antique car restoration fanatics…). Peripheral speech is not institutionally sanctioned expert speech such as giving colloquia, teaching, or publishing an article, nor is it just expertise-irrelevant chit-chat. It’s speech that draws on the shared expertise and social identity of the community but in an informal way, around the margins of official expert speech.Meta-Philosophy
The sun was not yet coming up over Santa Monica Boulevard, but it had already been a long night of chai and I was looking for my car, which I had left on the street. A newish Mercedes screeched to a stop just in front of me, and fearing the worstâLindsay LohanâI stumbled back in the direction of my chai house. Two odd looking men got out, and none too subtly gestured that I should get in the back seat.Consciousness
