Parametric Modeling in AutoCAD: AECbytes Viewpoint #32

Katz Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP Many people are surprised by some of the work that I do at SOM. But while we have created a number of sophisticated tools for building modeling and analysis, it is not the work itself that provokes this reaction. Instead, it is the fact that much of the work has been done in AutoCAD. Two hot themes in computational design for architecture currently are "building information modeling (BIM)" and "parametric modeling. " What is Parametric Modeling? Building models are representations of buildings. Building models can be explicit, where every aspect of the model is well-defined and can be described, typically without referring to other parts of the model.

Parametric building models are a bit different. The next section describes and illustrates some examples of parametric modeling done with AutoCAD for exploring specific aspects of design projects at SOM. Supermanoeuvre. Digital Origami. Background An ancient Japanese proverb says: "If you meet a person that is able to make many items of different shape by folding up simple sheets of paper, don't think it is trivial, but try to learn.”

Digital Origami

The “first wave” of digital architecture hit the world in the mid nineties. Ninety percent of all final projects at Chris Bosse’s faculty were hand-drafted on tracing paper and out of balsa wood. Three years later, for his masters project, 90 percent of his fellow projects were digital. The digital revolution happened fast. Thus architecture divided between the digital visionaries and the ‘real’ architects who build. The Stuttgart Mercedes Benz Museum, for example, isn’t based on elevations and plans, but three-dimensional spatial experiences. The project The digital masterclass program at UTS under Anthony Burke invited Chris Bosse to run a highly intensive masterclass.

New Fabrications for Architecture

This was just a simple test print on the Euclid robot now that it is fully up and running, but it came out better than I was expecting. This whole layer based printing business is pretty easy. The details: It is printed with ABS plastic, size is 12 inches tall and 5x5 inches in plan. Because Ron 2.0 is such a huge plastic extruder the ‘line weight’ is very wide; that coupled with the speed that the robot was moving makes for a very thick walled structure.

So much so that I can stand on this thing, both upright and on its side. Reiser + umemoto.
