Maud Lewis (March 7, 1903 – July 30, 1970) was a Canadian folk artist from Nova Scotia. She remains one of Canada's best known and most loved folk artists. She suffered from disabilities as a result of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis . She began her artistic career by hand-drawing Christmas cards. These proved popular with her husband's customers as he sold fish door to door and encouraged her to begin painting. She used bright colours in her paintings and subjects were often of oxen teams, horses, or cats.

Joseph Stella (June 13, 1877 - November 5, 1946) was an Italian-born , American Futurist painter best known for his depictions of industrial America, especially his images of the Brooklyn Bridge . He is associated with the American Precisionism movement of the 1910s-1940s. Stella was born in Muro Lucano , Italy but came to New York City in 1896 to study medicine. However, he quickly abandoned his medical studies and turned instead to art, studying at the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase . His first paintings were Rembrandtesque depictions of city slum life. A remarkable draftsman, he made drawings throughout the various phases of his career, beginning as an academic realist .

George Wesley Bellows (August 12 [ 1 ] [ 2 ] or August 19, [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] 1882 - January 8, 1925) was an American realist painter , known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City , becoming, according to the Columbus Museum of Art , "the most acclaimed American artist of his generation". [ 6 ] George Bellows was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio . He was an only child, born four years after his parents married, at the ages of fifty and forty respectively. [ 7 ] His mother, Anna Wilhelmina Smith, was the daughter of a whaling captain. [ 7 ]

Charles Demuth (November 8, 1883 – October 23, 1935) was an American watercolorist who turned to oils late in his career, developing a style of painting known as Precisionism . "Search the history of American art," wrote Ken Johnson in the New York Times , "and you will discover few watercolors more beautiful than those of Charles Demuth. Combining exacting botanical observation and loosely Cubist abstraction , his watercolors of flowers, fruit and vegetables have a magical liveliness and an almost shocking sensuousness." Demuth was a lifelong resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania .

Steinlen, engraved by Pieter Dupont, 1901 Théophile Alexandre Steinlen , frequently referred to as just Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923), was a Swiss -born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Born in Lausanne , Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his new wife were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris .
