Taquigley16. Who Was Born Without Original Sin? How Could Someone Be Born Without Original Sin? : Adam and Eve, by disobeying God's command not to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2:16-17; Genesis 3:1-19), brought sin and death into this world. Roman Catholic doctrine and tradition hold that Adam's sin has been passed down from generation to generation. It is not simply that the world around us has been corrupted by Adam's sin in such a way that all those who have followed have found it nearly impossible not to sin (an admittedly simplified version of the Eastern Christian view), but that our very nature was corrupted in such a way that life without sin is impossible.

This corruption of our nature, passed down from father to child, is what we call Original Sin. Roman Catholic doctrine and tradition, however, also hold that three people were born without Original Sin. Yet how can that be, if Original Sin is physically passed from generation to generation? Sin has fallen on hard times. We exist in the paradox of a time with a profound realization that our problems are systemic, far exceeding individual is-tic consent or solutions, but the fundamental approach to sin in our society remains a litany of personal failures. Yet ecological disasters, fearsome instruments of war, vast systems of classism, racism, and sexism all have impact upon our lives, and we experience ourselves as caught up in such systems with or without our consent. At a time when it could be argued that we most need it, we have lost the ancient Christian doctrine of original sin as a corporate human condition preceding and affecting each individual. The issue, then, is this: most contemporary analyses of sin begin with the personal, and transfer it to the social, but individual analysis seems hard-pressed to account for the gravity of social ills confronting us.

Finally, the people of Shinar (in Babylonia) want to ignore God and make for themselves a great city, a great tower and a great name (11:4). From the very beginning man held a special place in God’s creation. Along with the gift of a soul came the gift of freewill.

Satan: The author of sin and Prince of evil A dark and seductive voice entered into the domain of man. Satan and the fallen angels became the essence of evil, and the tempter of mankind. Sometimes Original Sin gets simplified into the eating of an apple. Actually an apple is not mentioned.

It is fruit surely but what fruit we do not know. But what’s the big deal about eating an apple or piece of fruit? OK, maybe they shouldn’t have eaten it. But really, did an apple lead to all the pain and grief we experience today? As you may have guessed, No, it was not an apple or fruit per se that led to all this. Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s command. Notice the cascading effect that begins with a lack of trust. But the Devil tempted us in this sort of way: “You can’t trust God! So there it is Adam and Eve. Sadly, you know the rest of the story. ”Come on” says the Devil, “God is trying to limit your freedom, keep you down and doesn’t want you to be happy! And so often we buy into it. In sin, we choose ourselves over God as the text from the Catechism says. What is the biblical evidence for original sin?

There are several lines of biblical evidence for the historic Christian doctrine that we are all born into the world with sinful natures, due to the sin of Adam. Scripture says that we are born sinners and that we are by nature sinnersPsalm 51:5 states that we all come into the world as sinners: "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. " Ephesians 2:2 says that all people who are not in Christ are "sons of disobedience. " Ephesians 2:3 also establishes this, saying that we are all "by nature children of wrath. " If we are all "by nature children of wrath," it can only be because we are all by nature sinners--for God does not direct His wrath towards those who are not guilty.

God did not create the human race sinful, but upright. But we fell into sin and became sinful due to the sin of Adam. Scripture speaks of humans as unrighteous from infancy There are also verses which declare that we are all unrighteous from the time that we are born. What Does the Bible Say About Original Sin? Romanides [ This article originally appeared in the St. Vladimir's Seminary Quarterly, Vol. IV, Nos. 1 and 2, 1955-6. ] Synthetic Observations Concluding Remarks In regard to the doctrine of original sin as contained in the Old Testament and illumnated by the unique revelation of Christ in the New Testament, there continues to reign in the denominations of the West--especially since the development of scholastic presuppositions--a great confusion, which in the last few centuries seems to have gained much ground in the theological problematics of the Orthodox East. If one is to vigorously and consistently maintain that Jesus Christ is the unique Savior Who has brought salvation to a world in need of salvation, one obviously must know what is the nature of the need which provoked this salvation.[ 2 ] It would, indeed, seem foolish to have medical doctors trained to heal sickness if there were no such thing as sickness in the world.

What is original sin? Question: "What is original sin? " Answer: The term “original sin” deals with Adam’s sin of disobedience in eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and its effects upon the rest of the human race. Original sin can be defined as “that sin and its guilt that we all possess in God’s eyes as a direct result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden.” The doctrine of original sin focuses particularly on its effects on our nature and our standing before God, even before we are old enough to commit conscious sin. There are three main views that deal with that effect. Pelagianism: This view says that Adam’s sin had no effect upon the souls of his descendants other than his sinful example influencing those who followed after him to also sin.

Arminianism: Arminians believe Adam’s sin has resulted in the rest of mankind inheriting a propensity to sin, commonly referred to as having a “sin nature.” Recommended Resources: Basic Theology by Charles Ryrie and Logos Bible Software. Modern thinkers claim that evolution disproves it. Some object to the idea of inheriting sin from our parents, while others simply deny sin itself. Some Christians claim that the Bible never teaches it and so on. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), the doctrine of original sin is in some sense the reverse side of the doctrine of Redemption (CCC 389).

The concept of original sin is not exclusively Catholic. Now the doctrine of original sin cannot be proven by natural reason, but it is easily witnessed by its symptoms: the need for police, the collapse of great civilizations, suicide, suffering and so on. Modern thinkers may claim that evolution disproves original sin, even though evolution is still only a theory. Others may not only deny original sin, but deny sin altogether. Original Sin. I. Meaning Original sin may be taken to mean: (1) the sin that Adam committed; (2) a consequence of this first sin , the hereditary stain with which we are born on account of our origin or descent from Adam .

From the earliest times the latter sense of the word was more common, as may be seen by St. Principal adversaries Theodorus of Mopsuestia opened this controversy by denying that the sin of Adam was the origin of death. After some time the Pelagians admitted the transmission of death — this being more easily understood as we see that parents transmit to their children hereditary diseases — but they still violently attacked the transmission of sin ( St. Original sin in Scripture The classical text is Romans 5:12 sqq. We shall now show what, in the text, is opposed to the three Pelagian positions: What is original sin. By Matt Slick Original sin is known in two senses: the Fall of Adam as the "original" sin and the hereditary fallen nature and moral corruption that is passed down from Adam to his descendents. It is called "original" in that Adam, the first man, is the one who sinned and thus caused sin to enter the world.

Even though Eve is the one who sinned first, because Adam is the Federal Head (representative of mankind), his fall included or represented all of humanity. Therefore, some hold that original sin includes the falling of all humanity. Some see original sin as Adam's fallen nature being passed to his descendents. "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned," (Rom. 5:12).

Original sin is not a physical corruption, but a moral and spiritual corruption. There has been much debate over the nature of the sin of Adam and how it affected mankind.
