Atop the Garden's Walls: OpenSim and Mesh - Understanding the Misunderstandings

I feel that a lot of the anti-mesh sentiment is a result of misinformation, bad experiences, and a whole slew of other issues that are not the fault of the mesh format at all. To be fair, as a reference, I have experience in all three forms of geometry building: prims, sculpts, and mesh. Not just small glances. I have done full scale, thorough projects using each. Invalid reasons to despise mesh: Your viewer doesn't support itThere are very few viewers that are still in active development, that do not support mesh.Your viewer is still your choice- but remember, it's only your choice.

A Quick Primer in 3D Graphics Cards On the most fundamental level, everything rendered in the SL viewer is composed of triangles, and textures mapped onto those triangles. The graphics card sees everything in this manner: These are the "primitives" in the belly of the beast. Ok now let's see that in a way that actually makes sense: Efficiency That's right. OpenSim Archives. Introduction The OpenSimulator Archive (OAR) function has existed since OpenSimulator 0.5.9.

OpenSim Archives

The facility does a similar job to load-xml2/save-xml2 in that it saves prims so that they can be later reloaded. However, OpenSimulator archives (OAR) go a step further in that they can save all the necessary asset data so that you may fully restore the terrain, region parcel data, the textures of objects and their inventories when loaded onto a completely different system using a different asset database. Usage From the region console, one can type save oar [--noassets] [-h|--home=<url>] [--publish] [--perm=<permissions>] [--all] [<filename>] to save an OpenSimulator archive.

Save oar save oar my.oar save oar c:/mybackups/filename.oar save oar oars/11nov.oar To load an archive, type load oar [--merge] [--skip-assets] [<location>] at the console. Load oar load oar my.oar load oar my.oar load oar --merge oars/3rd-party.oar load oar I recommend that you use filenames with the extension .oar. Switches. Une standalone chez soi. 0.7.5 Release. General Welcome to OpenSimulator 0.7.5, an open-source multi-user 3D virtual environment/metaverse server platform.

0.7.5 Release

As ever, OpenSimulator is a highly complex piece of alpha software. It's very likely but not guaranteed to work and various usage scenarios (standalone, grid, hypergrid, etc.) in combination with different dependencies (e.g. different versions of mono on Linux/Mac) can produce unexpected or unstable behaviour. If it breaks you get to keep both pieces. If you are upgrading from a version prior to 0.7.x, make sure to read the 0.7 Release notes. When you are upgrading, we strongly recommend that you start off with the default configuration files and port over any changes you made to your older version of OpenSimulator.
