David Jason: His Only Fools and Horses secrets. It is 30 years since the first episode of Only Fools and Horses was aired on BBC1. When it was broadcast on Tuesday, September 8, 1981, the reception was lukewarm at best from viewers and critics alike. But it quickly grew into one of the best-loved programmes on British television. Here star David Jason, who played wheeler-dealer trader Del Trotter, reveals his secrets of the show in new book Only Fools and Horses - The Official Inside Story. Del Trotter.. hero, villain and healer I've always seen Del as a sort of modern Robin Hood even though he didn't ever rob anyone. He didn't mind where his gear came from, only how much he could knock it out for. One reason he was a failure was because he needed to apply his brain to bigger things. TV channel Gold has built the replica set in a tower block in the south London area where wheeler-dealer Del and his clumsy brother lived. The original headache-inducing carpet, curtains and chairs are all in place, as is Del’s bar. John Challis, aka Boycie, visited the flat with on-screen wife Sue Holderness, who played Marlene. ‘It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since it all began,’ he said. ‘It’s the best sitcom there is. The show changed my life and being back in the Gold Nelson Mandela House is incredible.’ For anyone who fancies spending a night under Del Boy’s tiger-print satin sheets, this is your chance.
