Ecosystems cope with stress more effectively the greater the biodiversity. Higher average temperatures and increasing salt concentrations are stress factors that many ecosystems face today in the wake of climate change.

Tomorrow’s Zoo: Cloned Dodos and Cyborg Giraffes? Resurrecting long-dead species, bioengineering friendlier animals, and creating robot creatures made of artificial tissue: These are some of the concepts proposed by prominent zoo directors, animal behaviorists, conservationists, and architects at a first-ever symposium about the future of zoos, held in Buffalo, New York, this winter.

Tomorrow’s Zoo: Cloned Dodos and Cyborg Giraffes?

Some presenters touched on familiar themes of introducing more open terrain where large animals could roam freely. Others explored vertical zoos—high-rise exhibits that would have a small footprint in crowded cities. 3D Printing Set to Transform Development? The Economist (February 10, 2011) recently featured a story on quickly evolving ‘3D printing.’

Sure to transform how we produce material ‘things,’ from jewellery to mobile phones to car parts or even cars, 20% of 3D output is already final products rather than prototypes and the prediction is that this will rise to 50% by 2020 (Terry Wohlers in The Economist). 3D Printing Is A Game Changer: [Sponsored Post] Hugh Evans is a vice president at T.

Next big idea in forest conservation? New iPad, iPhone app helps mariners avoid endangered right whales. New iPad, iPhone app helps mariners avoid endangered right whales April 4, 2012 For the first time, mariners operating along the U.S. east coast can receive a visual display of all relevant right whale management initiatives and warnings via their iPad or iPhone, including Seasonal and Dynamic Management Areas, Mandatory Ship Reporting areas, recommended routes, and automatic whale alerts triggered by acoustic detection buoys.

A GPS system in the iPad shows the ship's location relative to the management measures, simplifying mariner compliance. Clicking on a screen or icon activates a pop-up window with additional information. The accompanying image shows the iPad display as seen by a mariner approaching Boston Harbor. Download here. Mariners along the U.S. east coast can now download a new iPad and iPhone application that warns them when they enter areas of high risk of collision with critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.

Rapid development of ICT has made it possible to easily collect georeferenced information on tree species and their environment, and to use it for analyzing biological diversity, its distribution and threats to it. Such analyses can inform development of conservation strategies and priorities, especially across countries or species distribution ranges. We present recent case studies on spatial biodiversity analyses across the tropics, demonstrating how such analyses can help to identify most unique or most threatened populations of a tree species for conservation actions. Remote microscopy and the future of digital tools in plant biosecurity. Michael Thompson1,2, Gary Kong1, Ken Walker3, Julianne Farrell4 and Amy Carmichael4 1Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity, 2Queensland University of Technology, 3Museum Victoria, 4Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Digital diagnostic tool development and remote microscopy are an exciting growth area in plant biosecurity.

The usefulness of the current Remote Microscope Network (RMN) in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Pacific Islands is clearly apparent (Thompson et al., 2011). With technological developments, continued biosecurity community uptake, and regulatory support, digital diagnostic tools have the potential to make a significant impact in protecting Australian plant biosecurity. Urban rooftops have become one of the places where bee enthusiasts can keep their hives – but not everyone has a usable rooftop. Photograph: Dan Kitwood/Getty Images Prospective beekeepers with nowhere to put a hive are to be matched with available land by a new website aimed at harnessing surging interest in urban beekeeping.

The "Hive Talking" site has an interactive map designed to connect people who want to keep bees with gardeners and allotment keepers who are happy to have bees on their land.
