The video stream for this lecture can be watched here . Draw any map of electronic music and you’ll definitely need Front 242 somewhere at its centre. Taking a lead from the UK industrial scene of the mid-‘70s, the Brussels band set out on a path of exploration and innovation that has continued pretty much to the present day. More of a forward-thinking community than a traditional group, Front 242 was at the forefront of electronic music’s move into the mainstream and continues to defy convention in its sonic communication. RBMA: Today we have the pleasure of welcoming members of the band, which, if I am not totally mistaken, was the first band I ever owned all the records, which were officially on the market when I was 12 or whatever. So, yes, we do have a bit of an interest here as well, so bear with us with a little childhood trauma and psychoanalysis and welcome to the stage Front 242.

Le 8 février 1980, trois mois avant le suicide de Ian Curtis, Joy Division donnait l’un de ses derniers concerts à l’université de London Union. L’affiche de la soirée promettait alors un line-up étourdissant avec A Certain Ratio , Section 25 et Killing Joke en guise de triple première partie. Le journaliste du NME présent à l’époque décrivait l’apparition discrète des synthétiseurs dans le set de Joy Division comme “une nouveauté n’altérant en rien la cohérence et l’équilibre de la musique”. L’intégralité de l’enregistrement du concert de Joy Division apparait sur la réédition de l’album Closer , parue en 2007. Et il est disponible sur Youtube depuis quelques semaines.
