The percentage of people failing the test has increased steadily since 2010-11, following the Department of Immigration and Border Control's move to increase the passing mark from 60 per cent to 73 per cent in 2009. It remains a relatively small number at less than 2,200 people, or 1.9 per cent, in the previous financial year, according to the Department's annual report. A spokesperson for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection told the ABC that applicants from approximately 80 different countries failed the citizenship test through 2014-15.

Many asylum seekers have attempted suicide, and some have to be admitted to the psychiatric ward. Doctors say up to five asylum seekers are brought to the Royal Darwin Hospital every day, and the association has accused the Federal Government of ignoring the fact that the hospital cannot cope with the numbers. AMA Territory president Paul Bauert says staff at the hospital, who already have to deal with the highest rates of illness in Australia, are overloaded and frustrated.

Rated amongst the poorest countries of the world its people should be rich with natural resources and raw minerals estimated worth $24+ trillion US. In Afghanistan there are some 1.3 million people of concern according to the UNHCR, comprising asylum-seekers, refugees, returning refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The first half of 2011 saw a rapid increase in conflict-induced internal displacement, creating nearly 100,000 new IDPs and bringing the total IDP population to approximately 500,000 people by mid-year.

There are currently an estimated 3,054,709 Afghan citizens living overseas, with the vast majority in Iran (1,019,700) and Pakistan (1,900,000). In Pakistan, the vast majority of refugees live in refugee villages and urban slums, while in Iran around 97 per cent of the refugee population lives in urban areas. Iraqis make up the 2nd largest refugee population in the world with an estimated 2 million people having fled the country since 2003. The United States officially ended its seven-year combat operations in August 2010, reducing the number of troops to about 49,700. The US and Iraq have agreed that all US military personnel will leave the country by the end of this year. Iraq is still a very dangerous place. According to the Iraq Body Count website, an average of over 200 people are killed in the country every month.
