In this ‘Need-to-Know’ blog post series my aim is to share noteworthy stories that speak of need-to-know developments within higher education and K-12 that have the potential to influence, challenge and/or transform the traditional model of education.

There were significant developments this week in the education arena, but two reports published by non-education institutions are worthy of review. One describes behaviour patterns and statistics of Internet users globally, and the other shares innovative technologies we should pay attention to—several that will affect how we go about educating learners. Some are imminent, some longer term, but either way there will be more changes ahead for education. Another significant development this week is Coursera’s announcement that shocked many, though perhaps we are becoming numb to the MOOC news? Either way I’ll review briefly the key developments. The second running of my MOOC (massive open online course) Introduction to Mathematical Thinking ended recently. The basic stats were: Total enrollment 27,930. Georgia Tech unveils first all-MOOC computer science degree

On first glance, that doesn’t sound too bad at all. A couple weeks ago, Georgia Tech shook up the world of higher education with the announcement of an Online Master of Science in Computer Science, believed to be the first computer science degree at a major university to be taught entirely with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). MOOCs have been in the news for the past year, due to their potential to disrupt the traditional academic system. Traditionally free of charge with almost limitless enrollment capacity, MOOCs have as yet rarely been leveraged for accredited degrees.

Georgia Tech believes this initiative will put the university squarely on the forefront of the movement. The announcement does not come without its own share of controversy, though. At Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design - known as the d.school - students of all disciplines learn the design thinking process as a methodology for creative and human-centered problem solving that empowers them to collaborate across disciplines and tackle the world’s biggest challenges. In this experiential course - free and open to all - you will learn the design thinking process by tackling a real world innovation challenge. As preparation for each stage of the challenge, you will explore the main design thinking concepts through short videos, each paired with brief activities to practice relevant methods and approaches.
