New Smartphone and Tablet Usage Data Revealed (NASDAQ:AAPL, NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:MSFT, NYSE:NOK, NYSE:IT, NYSE:S, NYSE:T, NYSE:VZ, NYSE:PCS, NASDAQ:LEAP, NYSE:XLK. New statistics were unveiled today on projected trends in the usage of smartphones, tablet computers, and mobile connected devices.

According to latest research from In-Stat, about 65% of US households would own either a smartphone or tablet by 2015, and the average household would have at least four Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices. Gartner (NYSE:IT) predicts strong growth in smartphones shipments with this year’s volume estimated to be 468 million, up 58% over last year. Forecast for the next year is 630 million, up 35% and rising to 1.1 billion in 2015.

These strong forecasts are echoed in estimates released by GSMA, forecasting the number of total connected devices is expected to increase from approximately 9 billion today to more than 24 billion in 2020. Android is the most popular operating system, with 40 percent of mobile consumers reporting they have a smartphone with an Android OS. Apple's iOS is in second place, with 28 percent. Among those who say they are likely to get a new smartphone in the next year, approximately one third say they want their next smartphone to be an iPhone and one third say they want an Android device. However, among those who say they are usually the first to embrace new technologies, "Innovators" or the earliest of early adopters, Android leads as the "Next Desired Operating System" - 40 percent for Android compared to 32 percent for iOS.

Among likely smartphone upgraders, it is the "Late Adopters" who are most likely to say they are "not sure" which operating system they'd like in their next smartphone.
