Project explores the 'internet of things' Researchers from UCL have developed a digital tool that allows people to attach memories to objects in the form of text, audio or video. 'Tales of Things' encourages users to 'tag' objects with digital media using the sort of technology found in Oyster Cards and bar codes.

Project explores the 'internet of things'

Users can upload an image of the object and an associated memory in the form of text, audio or video to the project's website—talesofthings.com—or using a dedicated iPhone application. Once the user has entered this information they receive a unique barcode which they can attach to the object. Objects are tagged using RFID tags and QR Codes, which are used in products such as the Oyster Card and on consumer goods.

This code can be read by taking a photograph from a mobile phone or webcam, linking the object back to its entry on the website. The tags will enable future generations to have a greater understanding of the object’s past and offer a new way of preserving social history. Tales of Things and Electronic Memory. Remember Me. Remember Me - TOTeM The RememberMe artwork is a collaborative project with the Oxfam shop, near Contact Theatre. Leading up to FutureEverything, a research assistant will be based in the shop and recording brief stories about the donated objects into a microphone: where they acquired it, the memories attached and any associated stories.

This audio clip will be linked to an RFID tag and QR code. During FutureEeverything all tagged items will then join the shop’s stock. Customers, including conference delegates, will be invited to use our bespoke RFID readers, or their own smart phone to browse artifacts, displayed amongst the many thousands of other objects. Once triggered, RememberMe labeled objects, will replay the story through speakers located in the shop, evoking ghosts of the past.

FutureEverything delegates are encouraged to bring something to the conference to donate to Oxfam, and to record a story with it. QRcode.com.
