The SCVNGR-owned platform has bagged its first big brand. LevelUp is teaming with Villa Pizza, a national pizza chain with more than 400 locations, to use smartphones, deals and QR codes to entice users to pay with their mobile devices. The announcement coincides with the launch of a Villa Pizza location in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Users will get a $10 LevelUp voucher the Manhattan location good for all day, essentially giving people free pizza while they celebrate 2012.

The partnership is also a sign of things to come for LevelUp. BilltoMobile scores deal with Sprint for direct mobile payments

The deal is much like similar deals that the startup has struck with AT&T and Verizon. It shows that we are heading to a world where it will be simpler to pay for goods with our mobile phones rather than credit cards. San Jose, Calif. -based BilltoMobile lets users pay for something they want online by billing it to the user’s mobile phone. The capability will be implemented in coming weeks and it means BilltoMobile will be able to reach 240 million mobile subscribers. With BilltoMobile, you simply indicate that you want to pay with your mobile phone number and enter the phone number. This kind of purchasing has been popular in Europe and Asia, but now BilltoMobile, which is majority owned by Korea’s Danal, is making it more practical for U.S. consumers.

Mobile payments company Paydiant picks up $7.6M

The Boston, Mass. -based startup says the funding will go into product development and sales and marketing. Paydiant is still in stealth mode but is planning to launch officially later this year. According to a press release, the company is focused on a cellphone-based payments solution for everyday purchases. That’s not saying much, besides the fact that they are entering a pretty competitive marketplace. However, the company’s three founders (who were not available for interviews), Chris Gardner, Kevin Laracey and Joe Paratore all have experience in the field.

Jim Moran from North Bridge and John Simon from General Catalyst are also taking seats on Paydiant’s board of directors.
