Outfoxing Parkinson's: Michael J. Fox's personal, heroic quest

Now, through his work leading The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF), actor and activist Michael J. Fox is helping to usher in a new future for people with Parkinson's disease (PD)—one filled with hope. “I know without fail that we are getting closer—day by day, year by year—to the breakthroughs that will make finding a cure inevitable,” Fox tells Neurology Now. “A lot of work lies ahead of us. Parkinson's disease is a central nervous system disorder in which the brain has difficulty controlling the movements of the body. Years ago, when he first considered creating a foundation to help people with the disease, Fox said, “I was not interested in a ‘write a check and hope for the best’ version of philanthropy-as-usual but an investment in a new kind of undertaking: the promise of quick action, accountability, innovation, and a positive outcome….

People can join the fight against PD in many different ways. Michael J. Fox: the disruptive philanthropist. Michael J. Fox Plays Guitar In 'Back To The Future' 'Johnny B. Goode," and 26 years later, he's still rocking the tune. Michael J. Fox, who traveled through time and alternate versions of the past and future as McFly in the beloved "Back to the Future" trilogy, hosted his annual charity benefit on Saturday night. Called A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson's, the event in New York City featured plenty of big names and performances, but none of them could touch what Fox pulled off on stage.

Donning a red guitar identical to the one he "played" in the school dance scene in the first film -- he actually simulated playing the music, while real musicians did the actual performing for that movie -- Fox rocked the Chuck Berry classic for the crowd. Fox turned 50 this year, the boyish actor who charmed audiences in "Family Ties" and "Back to the Future" says his battle to find a cure for Parkinson's disease keeps him young and too busy to feel ill. The Emmy Award-winning star told roughly 2,000 people gathered at a North American health conference Tuesday that his condition appears to have plateaued and that once-severe episodes of Dyskinesia -- a movement disorder that causes him involuntary tremors and sudden jerks -- have diminished. Accepting the disease and surrounding himself with like-minded supporters have helped him thrive beyond many people's expectations, he said, noting that anyone in a similar situation can do the same. "You have to empower yourself, acknowledge what the situation is, acknowledge what your goal is and just move toward it," Fox said at the HealthAchieve conference, an annual three-day gathering that draws more than 7,000 delegates from Canada and around the world.

Fox on Life’s Changes – and Choices. Is there a good reason to stay for the final day of SHRM’s annual conference, even in Las Vegas?

I’ve always wondered why SHRM even has a fourth day, because a good chunk of the attendees are either worn out (especially after a few days in Sin City) or simply choose to bag the last day and either go have fun or simply head home — as I usually do. But I have found that my decision to blow off the last day of the SHRM annual conference is also pegged to the Closing General Speaker, because in past years, none of them seemed sufficiently compelling to make me want to hang around for the better part of another day. That’s why this year is so different, because this year, SHRM is closing the conference with somebody I wanted to listen to — Emmy Award-winning actor Michael J Fox.

The 49-year-old brightened up Manhattan along with his 9-year-old daughter Esme in honour of Parkinson's awareness month, Entertainment Tonight reports. After the flicking of the switch, Fox commented: "It's a great honour from the city and we really appreciate it.

It's a great symbol, the Empire State Building, of achieving the impossible if you work together, and that's what we represent. " This week Fox made his third appearance as pharmaceutical lawyer Louis Canning in CBS drama The Good Wife. Actress Liz Hurley broke a world record last October by turning the Empire State Building and 39 other world landmarks pink in aid of a breast cancer awareness drive.
