The rsyslog Windows agent enables customers to integrate Windows Event Logs into their central rsyslog-based logging system. Even more, it supports acting as a syslog relay as well. This enables small branch offices only runnig Windows to provide local syslog sources to the central server as well. We have released the first full-featured version of this product today. It is based on Adiscon’s mature suite of Windows-to-syslog tools .

Microsoft Notepad is a word processing tool included with Windows and is installed by default under the Accessories program group. You can use it to create a log-type file that adds the current date and time each time the Notepad file is opened. This article describes how to create a log file with Notepad. On the File menu, click Save As , type a descriptive name for your file in the File name box, and then click OK . When you next open the file, note that the date and time have been appended to the end of the log, immediately preceding the place where new text can be added. You can use this functionality to automatically add the current date and time to each log entry.

Several free and commercial implementation of Windows syslog daemon exist. Windows Services for Unix ( SFU 3.5 ) contains syslogd daemon that can forward messages to Unix LOGHOST. So in a way syslogd is a standard Windows component, a part of Microsoft "Linux for Windows". Version that ships with SFU3.6 is old and an update is available from UNIX Tools Community (free registration required): Like any standard syslog daemon it is capable of both writing messages to files and sending mail to Windows users, depending of their origin and severity. Also provided is a standard logger utility which is slightly deferent from Solaris (accepts no options).
