3D Shapes Poem {Freebie} Thanks so much to each of you who commented on my last post about needing help with ideas for 3D shapes.
I am going to try to implement lots of them this week. I also found a poem and made it a little more kinder friendly. I'll probably add it to our Reading Binders and try to recite it the rest of the week. Click on the picture below to download a copy for yourself. WARNING--Do not read the following statement if we're teetering on the edge of friendship, because I promise this will automatically put me in frenemy status for unnecessary grossness! On a somewhat unrelated note, several people mentioned using toilet paper tubes as a match for cylinders and I can't get a little scenario out of my head.
I can't remember who said this, but I was in a workshop and the presenter mentioned not asking for students to bring in toilet paper rolls anymore. Hotmail - ltdisyummy. The Lesson Plan Diva: Freebies, ideas and Science Activities! I hope everyone had a wonderful Monday!
We are working on estimation and greater than and less than this week. I have started introducing both over the past couple of weeks and they students are really loving it! I wanted to share with you 2 of their most favorite activities. I have done these every year and they are always a big hit! When we are learning about estimation, I have them completing several activities where they are making their ‘best guess’ on sets of objects. Have them trace their hands with a crayon and then discuss how many Froot Loops they think will fill their handprint. Next we have or Alligator Greater activity. We are also working on light and shadow in science and my friend Katie from Dishing It Out makes the greatest science and social studies activities! Then we completed the sorting activity using picture cards on my ladybug so the students could really see and understand the difference between the two terms. Math. This week I came to the realization that I am done with winter.
I'm tired of cold, snow, wind, ice, sleet, and gray skies. So I began a personal crusade in my classroom to get rid of every wintery image. Snowflakes, snowmen, blue decor, everything - GONE. My new mantra has become "if you decorate it, spring will come. Rainbows have become my official classroom symbol for all of the warmth, sunshine, and brightness that I am looking forward to. Our first step toward inviting Spring weather: Rainbow window decorations made from simple supplies of clear contact paper, tissue paper, and construction paper. Preparation Like all previous classroom stained glass decorations, my students did nearly all of the work themselves. Here's what you need to begin: 100 Day Activities All About Me. Print the pages.

Patch Tool. Shapes...Shapes....Shapes.... 3D! - Kindergarten Kindergarten. My kids love 3-D shapes even more than they love 2-D shapes!
They are super excited to learn everything they can about them, so that makes my job very easy. As always, hands-on exploration is essential in order for students to develop a solid understanding of 3-D shapes. So we play and explore a lot! I let the kids explore 3-D shapes by building, stacking, rolling, etc. Then, together, we create an achor chart. Then we think of examples in real life--and this is where the real fun begins! Here are just a few examples of objects that make their way into the museum... And a few others that don't fit...mostly triangular prisms (which the kids mistakenly think are pyramids) and eggs (what shape are eggs, anyway? Here is one of my favorites from this year...the kids dubbed it a "Star-angular Prism"!
After a couple of weeks, all the shapes go back home. Marshmallow/toothpick 3D shapes.
