Let’s face it; being able to speak multiple languages would be really cool.

Speak several languages without mixing them up

But can it be done by the average person without getting really confused? When I was living in Spain, still only able to speak English, I hung out with a Brazilian who absolutely wowed me as he switched between people at our international meet-ups. He would talk to me in flawless English, make an aside to another Brazilian in Portuguese, turn over his shoulder to say something in French and shout over to the group organizer in Spanish. All with total ease. Shyness: Stop identifying with being shy. This is another post that is going to ruffle some feathers, but it has to be said.

Shyness: Stop identifying with being shy

YOU ARE NOT SHY. Stop describing yourself as such. How can I be so bold as to claim that almost nobody reading this is actually shy? Well, because everyone says they are shy. Sound contradictory? When pretty much everyone says it, the meaning of the word gets watered down to nothing. People’s identification with shyness and/or introversion comes from something similar to the Forer effect, where a vague personality description is identified as “very accurate” by the large majority.

The original test run by Forer, and repeated by many many others like Derren Brown (click to see the video) had the following or similar text (among other suggestions) that almost everyone gave a 5 out of 5 rating for accuracy: “At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved.” Your basis of comparison doesn’t exist.

Signing up for an Esperanto conference… in Esperanto! (Part 2 of 2)

Nov, 2010 by Chuck Smith in Uncategorized In my last blog post, I started to explain how to sign up for an Esperanto conference such as determining how long to stay and where. Now, where were we… how about food? Do you want to cook your own meals? Most people like to not worry about meals and just join everyone in the cafeteria, but some people love buying their own food and cooking. So, now that we have lodging and food out of the way, do you want to contribute to the program? Elsendo de la 22a de novembro 2010. Signing up for an Esperanto conference… in Esperanto! Celebrate the New Year, in Esperanto style!

Nov, 2010 by Chuck Smith in Events, JES There is a long tradition of Esperanto New Years meetings in Germany since 1957 with the international youth meeting, Internacia Seminario (IS). After 20 years, some “older people” remembered the IS and wanted to relive the experience and started the Internacia Festivalo (IF) for families, older people and their children. In 2002, the IF started to get too full, so another Esperanto meeting for adults was founded: the Novjara Renkontiĝo.

In 2004, many young Eastern Europeans thought the IS was too expensive and wanted to make their alternative meeting called the Ago-Semajno (AS), so from 2004-2007, young Esperanto speakers had to choose between attending AS and IS. Interview with director of Conlang: The Movie

Nov, 2010 by Chuck Smith in Interview Epic linguistic battle The director of Conlang, Marta Masferrer, speaks about her latest film and the role Esperanto plays there! What’s the film about? CONLANG tells the story of Carl Tedesco, a 26 year-old unemployed conlang enthusiast who holds constructed language club meetings in the basement of his grandmother’s house. One day, Carl has a chance of becoming president of the Constructed Language Society, a club of people joined by their passion for invented languages. Who had the idea to make a film about constructed languages and why?

Baldvin Kari, the screenwriter, learned about the world of constructed languages through Kari Emil Helgason, the creator of USCANIV. Is Hungarian easy or hard? I’m sure the title of this post will have many people doing a double take, but yes you read that right; Hungarian is easy. Hungarian is not an Indo-European language (i.e. Hindi actually has more in common with English/French/German/Russian etc. than Hungarian does), so it’s very different to all of its neighbours and this gives it the reputation of being among the most challenging languages in the world. And yes, it can be “hard”. But not because a bunch of people say it is; it only matters what you think if you are taking on the language yourself. There is no such thing as a hardest language, only a “hard” attitude. Derren Brown - Richard Dawkins.

Almost 140,000 words (534 pages) of free information about learning languages. This project was headed by Claude Cartaginese, who gathered the advice from dozens of “youtube polyglots, hyper-polyglots, linguists, language learners and language lovers” and put them all in this one book, which is free to everyone. The advice given in these pages is quite interesting and extremely varied! You have everything from brief to-the-point advice, to short biographies… to long biographies, and to inspirational stories. There are lots of language learners I have been in touch with including Moses McCormick, Stujay and Anthony Lauder (all of whom also contributed to the Language Hacking Guide), as well as several others that I have talked with… and even some I’ve argued with.

Claude got in touch with me just as the project was coming to a close and I was happy to contribute my own chapter to the book. Literatura Seminario / Literature Seminar.
