People suffer terribly when they lose contact with their loved ones and don't know where they are or whether they are safe. The ICRC and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies work together around the world to locate people and put them back into contact with their relatives. This work includes looking for family members, restoring contact, reuniting families and seeking to clarify the fate of those who remain missing.

The event focused on the important and expanding role of technology on democratic elections and the electoral process both domestically and internationally. Department of State.Update: Comcel Voila customers can now access the 4636 (INFO) short code in Haiti to report their needs and locations. A group of engineers from the tech community launched a free SMS relief information service to help people in Haiti. The text message program allows people with Digicel service to text their location and their need to a free short code: "4636" (INFO). For example, someone could text "I need water" or "I need medical help" with their location and these messages will be routed to aid organizations and emergency responders on the ground for free. If you know someone in Haiti, please share the "4636" program with them so they can text their needs and sign up for further information on relief efforts. What I find remarkable is the capacity that has been built up in the last few years; from software standards, like the pfif standard generated after Katrina, to early systems like the Ushahidi engine designed during the Kenyan election violence, to larger organizations and resources like the Crisis Commons wiki and the Crisis Camps. First on the scene were a variety of technologists who were addressing the problem of people finding — how to bring separated people back together, both for peace of mind and for social capital. Several sites started offering this service, like the American Red Cross FamilyLinks and the custom-made Haitianquake.com.

Also just launched by Ushahidi, is an effort to create a sort of 911 for Haiti, based on SMS messages. The SMS shortcode 4636 is now live, and messages are being queued.
